ahh good to know. Especially considering how our tow hook in the rear is just wide out in the open

You guys do know that if a thief wants your car, they will steal it regardless of what theft deterrent you have on it. It may take a little longer but an hour was plenty of time for the OPs car to be stolen :(

    OP any leads yet?

A car theft like this is someone who knows what they are looking for. Some of the slick trucks (imagine an F250 with a tow truck back secreted in the bed) can have a car hoisted in no time.

If you really put money into your car and use it as a DD or often in parts of town you wish you needn't... get LoJack. It wont prevent the theft but recovery is often. If you decide to even advertise your car is equipped with it that will send a strong message of deterrence.

Being RWD I will park accordingly, so it cannot just be snaked by a stealth truck without headaches.

I see this kind of crap often enough to have an idea what works, what doesn't, what can and what won't.
how do you go about doing that?

That suck, crime is just getting worse here in NorCal with all the people needing money probably the same in SoCal. They probably punched the door luck and the ignition to get it going.

I had to do the same thing for a e30 I bought from a wrecker with no keys took less then 10 minutes for me to get the steering unlocked and car started and I was trying to minimize the damage.

    Losing a passport sucks.

Sucks to hear what happened! When on CL and see these parts I will let you know.
They should have Surveillance cameras everywhere there. Someone or somthing had to have seen your car drive off.

Thanks everyone for the comments, however there hasn't been any progress so far. Since its a weekend, almost everywhere is closed and I won't be able to do much until Monday.

Thanks guys for helping out. I still have no idea how they stole the car, there wasn't any glass on the ground, the car was locked and the steering wheel was locked as well. I don't get how they had so much time to work on it, but it I guess it's not surprising in a mall parking lot, and without any surveillance, I'm sure its all gone by now.
