    Another 'not a true M motor' because it has a turbo.

    So when are people going go to start calling this thing the M1 since you know, its the M version of the 1 series.

      bmw already made an ///M1, this doesn't even compare.

      it looks okay, but needs more power.

        BMW knew it could never sell the Euro spec E36 M3 at the price point they would need to in the US, hence we got the toned down car. Now the E92 M3 runs into the mid to upper 60's pretty easily and people bitch about the price, hence we get the 1M and the 335si.

          It was smart of BMW to play with the fledgling turbo technology.
          In the 80's BMW motorsport claimed that they were for engines...Paul Rosche was the engine wizard. He was the man responsible for the brutal turbos, but only because of the rules.
          The fact that BMW motorsport did use the turbo very early on is because the racing rules dictated it. If the FIA had not allowed turbos or had closed any loopholes allowing turbos, they would not have happened.


          The rise of computer technology for engine management has aided the rebirth of the turbo for clean useable power.
          Every high volume manufacturer is going turbo.


          It is just a shame that the days of high revving powerful NA machines is over...

          The trend in Europe now is going towards small capacity turbos of 1.6 litres.

          Pretty soon all we'll see is a mass under a bunch of plastic panels....No more cam covers, ITBs, plenums, Gears.

          The only Hi Po NA engine manufacturer is Ferrari .

            which is fine, just stop pretending it's the 2nd coming of the e30 m3. oh and i have no issues with turbo'd m motors. just that this one isn't. it seems to me that bmw's gotten into the habit of badging everything an m lately simply to drive up sales (case in point X5M). while this is great for short term sales, it damages the exclusivity of the M brand IMO.

              ^ agreed.

              This should just be called a 135is Msport. I agree that M now stands for marketing since this doesn't even have a motorsport engine. I also wish they would stop call this a modern day e30 m3. I'm sure its fun to drive but it just cheapens the prestige that M power once had. On the plus side, it makes older M cars all the more valuable.

                Eh, the "exclusivity" died when they stopped building the M cars by hand. That was 20 years ago. I'll take the fun car aspect at this point.

                  I think M did ok with this car... Its closer to the roots of motorsport then any current offering, and its 300lbs lighter then a reg 135. No car is going to be built like the e30m3 was specifically for entery into DTM. But this car most closely embodies that spirit in my mind. It will be the lightest and most nimble car bmw has in their lineup, and built in limited quantities from what I understand less than 3,000 so it may be a good investment as well. I think it will sell like gangbusters if its priced in the 42-45k range like they are predicting.

                      have we all forgotten the the 2002 turbo? I would prefer a NA motor but give the turbo a chance until it really is known to suck.

                          Good thing they called the car from the 70s M1 and not M3. Imagine the copyright issues with a '///3M' badge.

                              Its not... At least not in the US. I never really understood why the real e36 M3 wasnt brought over. The e30 M3 was super expensive when released and so were the e46 and e9x for that matter. Hell the e9x goes all the way up to $80k.

                              If the 1M is going to be limited to 2700 units I dont see why it cant take on the M3. Who cares if your super limited car takes a few M3 sales away... the ///Marketing advantages of the pocket supercar would far out way the very small amount of lost M3 sales.

                              If Audi is letting the Quattro concept take sales away from the R8 v8 and even the v10 why the hell not.
