    Cleaning sunroof drains

I have the common leak where water accumulates in the jack well spot in the trunk. I've searched and all and tried to troubleshoot where the water is coming from to no avail. The trunk seals seem to be fine and the tail light seals seem to be fine by testing them with a hose. I think it's my sunroof.

Now by my understanding the sunroof has 2 drains on each side. One drains goes down the side of the windshield and I tested pouring water down it and the water comes out at the bottom of the fender/rocker panel. I'm assuming this is where it's supposed to come out. Now when I pour water in the rear part of the sunroof it goes into the roof flowing towards the rear of the car. Where is this supposed to drain to? Should it drain to somewhere near the rear wheel? The water doesn't come out anywhere and I can't tell if it's going into the trunk cause I dont see it flowing into there when I pour water into the inside of the sunroof.

Anyway, how do I properly clean this drain? I've tried using a coat hanger but it's not long enough to really get back there and I obviously cant see what i'm hitting in there.(I'm talking inside the roof in the very back part of it where the sunroof drains to.)

Will pouring something in there like Draino work or will that F stuff up? I'm think it might be rusted through somewhere along the drain...

    Thanks for the help.

First pull your trunk lining out on the driver's side. You'll see the tube running from the sunroof to the body vent. This is where it drains. As for the leakage, I currently have the same issue. New trunk and light seals, new antenna grommet, and cleaned drains. Still gets wet down there when it rains. I think it maybe the hose connection on the vent itself or the seal on the vent is bad.

Said vent I'm talking about #10:

go to lowes hardware they sell a thing that you use a small single use CO2 thank and has a rubber cone on a end of the CO2 thank place it in the drain home and hit the button it will force anything in the line out. They use it for AC drains in house. When i get to my shop ill take a pic and post it . Sorry i dont know the true name of this thing

To clean the channels, I used a bass guitar string.

I have the same issue with the new to me E30, I was going to try to replace part #10 from that diagram with one from the junkyard to see if that did it, maybe I will see if the lines are clogged first.

I would say replace #9 first, it's cheap and is most likely the culprit. I don't think one from the junkyard is going to be any better really.

How did I miss that gasket? Good point, that would be a good idea to check out/replace first.

I'd also inspect the tail light gasket. It will fill your trunk with water like no other.

I used a section of weedwacker nylon cord.
