When people ask you what car you drive and you say a BMW and they get all excited until they see it...

Germany's Nürburgring is the world's automotive playground. A public park for gearheads. Sadly, it's been handed over to privateers who've put the entire 'Ring at risk. Michael Frison of 20832.com explains why we need to save the Nürburgring! — Ed.
I'm no expert on the ring, but In February, I'll have gone to it regularly for 5 years. I live 75km away and visit at least monthly, if not more (when not in Afghanistan)
I can definitely agree with the jalopnik article about this stupid new park/mall/whatever you call it. It's overbuilt for the area, and for sure doesn't make money.
I was up there in Nov with my Father who was visiting. My usual restaurants were all close for lunch since the off season had definitely kicked in, so we had to go to the new commercial places. The Brathuas type place was way way over priced (12 euro for bratwurst???) and it was completely empty.
Meanwhile, the real revenue producer, Tourist Laps continue to get boned in the ass every year. Besides the price increase, days open for lapping have been considerably cut. Blame it on the new popularity of the ring, or greedy owners, I don't know. What I do know is that when I first got to Germany, I could run up to the ring almost any day of the week and blow off some steam... Now I have to check the website to see what days might be open, then on that day, I still call to double check as it might have been rented out last minute.
In a way, I'm sad I'm leaving, but also a bit glad. My year pass was a total waste of money for a few reasons this year, so i'm glad I won't be giving Linder any more of my money.
we had a similiar issue here in Palm Beach where the track "Moroso" was small and limited as to what could be done and a group of investors with no motorsports back ground did a hostile take over. The track went from operating in the black with a great safety record to owing everyone in the county money and rumors of Ponzi schemes as well as a small child catching on fire on the kart track with no safety workers present.
