I bet I have pulled that crap out of 25 cars by now...my boxes don't fit with it in.

First: guys, this is NOT sound deadner. It is a ballast, intended to help achieve the legendary BMW front/rear weight balance. You may have noticed it really doesn't do shit as far as sound reduction, right? I mean yeah, it does a little, but hardly nothing.

Have you ever seen BMW do anything that ineffective? It weighs about 57 pounds.

I have done them using dry ice, heat guns, air hammers hammer and chisel...you name it I have tried it. I think this guys idea of frozen + air hammer is the winner, unless you get very lucky and have it simply pull up, which has happened only once for me.

          dry ice is the shiznit,

break it up, spread it out, cover in towel, wait twenty minutes, smack it with a mallet

heat gun leaves a gooey mess, and I burn't my hand doing it that way.

Why would I want to remove the weight directly over the back wheels? :s

Thats a great way to do it if you dont give a shit about the paint.

I take 3 flood lamps and a meat thermometer put it all in the trunk. Wait till the ambient temp is about 220f put on gloves, peel that shit right out of there.

takes about 20 minutes, 5 or less of it is actual work.

^^ depends on the car, every car I can think of off hand was primer under the trunk tar because they sprayed the body color over the tar. If memory serves bronzit tar was the most difficult.

Well then I'm not looking forward to removing my tar :-?
Should I leave the trunk ajar over a real cold night (About 15*F) and just manual hammer and chisel it?

no - use dry ice. I tried the above and put a cold chisel right through the floor of my trunk. No sharp objects next to thin steel.

I would smack it firmly with a hammer if it is 15 degrees out. I bet it shatters into big chunks and falls out nicely.

Most of mine came out quite easily, the adhesive was starting to stop working. I used a screwdriver & rubber mallet to get the rest out.

Mine came out in one piece. Just grabbed it and it all pulled out.
