    Rear ended, cracked oil pan.

To try and make this as short as possible, I will leave out the unimportant details.

My friend rear ended me yesterday morning before school. I thought there was no damage until my car started leaking oil in large amounts today. The oil pan was cracked by the power steering rack. Car still drives straight at up to highway speeds, brakes straight, and other than this, shows no evidence of being in an accident.
We didn't file an accident report, or an insurance claim as I didn't know of any damage until ~2 hours ago. I'm now kind of worried that there is other damage that I don't know of.

Should I get insurance involved? I can replace the oil pan myself, I've done it before, but I'd REALLY REALLY rather not. I'm also worried that if I get insurance to pay for the oil pan/replacement, his insurance would total my car and I'd get the shaft.

    unsuccessful in making this short.
    What should I do r3v?

Punch your friend in the face. Insurance will total your car if it was hit in the rear, if you believe the car is worth keeping, replace the oil pan yourself.

If it were me I would do it myself and charge him out of pocket. don't get insurance involved unless you have to. but have a frame shop look it over. how did he rear end you and now your oil pan is leaking???? seems strange...

Would insurance give me enough to purchase another car? even if I have to downgrade(upgrade?) to a 318i/325e.
My car needs new paint, front seats, dash, various other unnecessary but desired parts.

The oil pan was cracked by the power steering rack. I was extremely curious as well.
I'd rather not have insurance involved, but if I could get another e30 with good paint, at a minimal cost to my friend, who wouldn't?

          edit: sorry for double post

I don't understand how that would happen...do you have an accordian rear end now?

Pictures of where the pan is cracked?

            Anyways,
Take it to a shop and have your friend pay the bill, then you don't have to do it yourself.

I'll try and get pics up now.

edit: There is absolutely NO visible exterior damage.
The car he was driving was a '99 malibu, his windshield cracked and his airbags went off.

I tried to upload pictures, but I guess I forgot how to.

edit: maybe if I had plastic bumpers, the bumpers would've just cracked and I wouldn't have to replace my oil pan. haha

If you file an insurance claim on your friend's insurance, his rates will probably go up for a couple of years.

Sounds like you should ask him to buy you a new (used) pan AND then help you replace it.

Based on the info you've given so far, I'd avoid filing an insurance claim if at all possible.

EDIT: Oh, I'd replace the motor mounts too while you're at it, they're likely broken and that's why it was so easy for the engine to shift back and crack the pan when you got rear ended.

the rubber on the mounts look fresh, but I do need new trans mounts.
unfortunately he'd be more in the way than help probably, haha.
but I can definitely get him to pay for it.
                        Thanks for the advice, guys

the mounts are prone to separate, the rubber can look fine, but the metal disc that the threaded stud is welded to separates from the rubber part. Not saying yours are bad, but definitely check them.

sounds good, I'll go ahead and order them, heck, gotta jack up the motor anyways, right? :P

I just found more damage, on the fan shroud there is a nice, fresh gouge from where the powersteering pump's bolts rubbed into it. Also, the motor mount bolts are stripped???
What should I look for next?

dude, his fucking AIRBAGS went off? that was a serious impact bro. Are you sure your frame isn't tweaked?

most airbag systems don't got off unless it's an impact where you'd need it. like... 20+mph.
