    VW Quantum, Learn me.

I came across a VW Quantum sedan I could probably pick up for a song, and replace the e30 as DD. The Vortex is a bit lacking in info on these guys, they seem a bit rare & hard to get parts for. Beyond that the synchros look like they could be a fun, if time consuming and labor intensive side project & winter beater (read: dirt road rally-er.) I'm having a tough time coming up with much useful info. Does anyone have any firsthand experience with these cars or anything to contribute besides the usual "VW's are garbage" r3v response? Maintenance issues, specific things to look for? Pic for your viewing pleasure.

As far as I know the Quantum Syncro's have the same running gear as the 4000cs quattros.

The four-wheel drive system used in the Passat Variant Syncro shared the mechanics of the Audi 80/4000 quattro. I would go to vortex and see what the scoop is on the Audi 80 as I would assume they share many of the same parts/issues.

Also the VW chassis for that car is known as the B2 Passat.

VW's are not garbage(if your talking about the old school ones) never seen this before though. looks like it would be more money and work to keep up and repair than the e30

I have one. What in particular do you need to know?

Be prepared to really go through one with a fine tooth comb if you are serious about buying one. The syncro system is pretty bullet-proof much like its quattro cousin but it does have its weaknesses. The front stuff is about the same as a 4000Q but the rear is more like its golf rallye (or e30) with non adustable semi-trailing arms. The front and rear trans mounts like to wear out, the vacuum actuators/ lines break and make the diff locks inoperable. The 10v is pretty reliable but everything else is not aging very well on these cars. I've replaced my fuel distributor, ign. distributor (hall sender prob's) and various other sensors along the way. Brake calipers lock up, ebrake equalizers are pretty much non-existent on cars I've seen. The timing belt is a pain in the ass to change. The gauge clusters are problematic. Door handles break. My car is a manual crank window car with no sunroof so there haven't been any problems as far as that stuff goes. The clutch slave cylinders are a pain in the ass to replace as are the clutches.

With the bilstein sports and spring spacers it has sufficient ground clearance and even without the diffs locked they can get through some seriously deep snow/ mud. I beat the hell out of mine for a while until it overheated last fall. Its in the garage now, awaiting an engine from my brothers 4000 quattro when he gets his 10vT swap underway.

Don't let people tell you they are junk, this car has 200K on it now and was a TANK. Only reason its off the road is because the temp gauge (read: clusters are junk) was giving a false reading and I kept driving it.

There is very little stuff suspension-wise you can use from a 4000 quattro on a Quantum Syncro.

And yes it was moving around in snow this deep, not just pulled up to a snow bank to have a picture taken.

Plus it's a bit more unique than the billion subarus around here, and it's German, which I'm a fan of.

dirty30, you seem to have some good experiences. afaik, the car I'm looking at is a non-runner at the moment, what should I look for as far as issues that can cause this. I have a multimeter & I know how to use it. It's an auto, so sad, but ok for dd status because maybe I won't mod it. Any specific places to look for leaks, rust, or worn items? whats a reasonable asking price for a non-runner that's buried in snow at the end of somebody's driveway?

                  another, for teh lulz

They rust everywhere. The bottoms of the doors, the hatches rust badly, on the syncros where the rear subframe bolts up they rust out there. The fuel lines corrode pretty bad as well as the brake lines. Expect the front control arm/ subframe bushings to be shot. The e-brake cables are probably stuck if its been sitting for a while. For whatever reason the quantums weren't as bad as far as electrical stuff goes as the 4000Q's were.

If it was a runner its worth about $500. Non-runner? Free. I got my syncro running (albeit rusty) for $500. Drove it home. Hold out for a syncro if you want a quantum. The auto 4dr. cars just aren't worth the upkeep especially a non-runner. There was a cheap running QSW on thesamba.com just a few weeks ago for $500. Just my 2 cents.

I know none of these are really close to you but a good reference as far as price goes.

                            There's no H in Syncro.

My father had a VW Santana when I was a kid. Exact same thing. It was a diesel and I loved it.
