Crashed my baby, need help with insurance!!

Hi guys, I'm a noob here and hoping you all can help me out. About 4 months ago I bought a very clean 1990 BMW 325i, 2dr, 5 speed w/ about 200k miles. Straight body, fresh paint, clean interior (no tears in IS heated seats) with a new crack-less dash sporting fittipaldi wheels. All around clean car, nice driver (on rails), A/C and all electronics/lights work, and a strong motor. I paid $5k for the car - probably a little high but it was VERY clean.

Last month I caught some black ice and crunched the front fender/grill area. Long story short, USAA wants to total the car and is only offering me $3k, less my $500 deductible, netting me $2,500. Their independent appraisal company could only find 3 "comps" in the entire country - none of them as clean as mine. USAA tells me that to fight their value I need to hire my own appraiser to go to battle with theirs. My fear is that I'll spend $500-$800 on an appraisal but not get enough of a bump in valuation to make it worth the hassle & risk.

What do you guys think??? Should I fight this or am I dreaming thinking my car is really worth what I paid for it.....

Also, Any honest appraisers out there who know bimmers well enough to know how rare my car was and what a clean one is really worth? I'll spend the money if I find someone I can trust who's not just trying to take my $$.

    Thanks,
    Bret

but 3000 is fair for that car honestly. But i have seen yours for sale at 7000 and sell in a day or 2

that would average $4-5k. the color its self is rarer but then rest of the car looks stock with mid-highish miles.

there are a lot of people here, my friends included who have fought and won against their insurance. you can use ebay and several other sources to prove your cars worth.
      Much wow

I think apraisers are only like $100 or so.

Can you not total it and fix it and still have a clean title? Would they offer any money to fix it? If they did that, they would probably require it to have a reconstructed title.

Buy it back from them and strip it and sell everything then by another one.

              thanks guys for the thoughts!!

Cabriolet - Good info, I'll try doing that...

nwvb bmw - the appraisers here start in the 350 range and on top of that charge hourly to go to bat against the ins. company, if they have to fight them... I don't wanna hire them and have them do a flat rate job and not put any effort into it.

JBird - They won't let me fix it without a salvage/rebuilt title... I tried to get them to fix it cuz I had someone ready to buy it from me for 5k a few days before I crashed it... I was looking for an all wheel drive cuz of the snow :(

CJG - Good call, I just checked the valuation from USAA and the wheels were not mentioned... thx

thanks again guys for your help
