    stopping power

so i'm on the eastcoast, Maryland. got some snow last night, still sort of slushy as of now, but early today it was powdery and wet.
well i needed to go somewhere, dont like driving in bad conditions but thought it would be ok seeing as everything was melting and minimal ice.

so about 10min from my house i'm coming down a hill at about 45-50mph, the light at the bottom turns yellow, i new i wasn't gonna make the light even if i floored it, so i slammed the brakes(newly replaced rotors and pads, oem). the ABS took over, felt the brakes pulse, came to a controlled stop with no skidding, no slidding, and no funny noises afterwards. stopped about a foot short of the crosswalk, while the car next to me, a newer accord skidded halfway into the intersection. i just grew a lil closer to my car, i know she's gonna keep me safe!

thumbsup for gaining a new appreciation of my E30's capability!

my E30's brakes are poo :( can't even get ABS to kick on/or lock up the wheels if I slam them on at 65mph.

I find it amazing that for example my moms 2XXX Chrysler Sebring has all wheel disc airbag but no ABS, Figured that kinda thing would be standard back in the 80s

You would shit your pants and eat it if you'd live where I live. I just got my first car (1991 318is) in the middle of the canadian winter. I'm not saying its snowing all the time but we have our days, one day it was snowing so hard I could hardly see 20 feet in front of me.. that day a truck slid into the back of my car at a stop sign after only a week of me having it. I consider myself a good driver but you never know what idiot is following you

                +1

First time I drove my E30 was with an open diff, summer tires and blown shocks in the middle of a snow storm.

The 318is 60-0 in under 100' is pretty damned good for a factory car. Look up some modern cars brake distance and you realize how impressive the brakes are. A stat is prob the most underated performance stat of them all.

motorweek and a few other magazines did a review. And this was back in the early 90's with outdated tires!

yeah imagine modern tires, slight upgraded brakes, and better suspension to stop some of the weight shift! your passenger might make out with your dash board with too much pedal.

I live in utah, some of the roads i drive on at night on the way home from work on a snowy night i wonder how i made it home in a 2 wheel drive car with almost bald snow tires, they just know how to make it. They "use the force".
