    It's a very straight forward process, and I swear I've seen a photo guide for it, buuuut I can't find it anymore.

    Regardless;

    Remove the shift knob with a good yank (wear a helmet)
    Remove the shift boot by squeezing the base in as it's held in by little clips.

    Go underneath the car, locate the selector rod, just about the driveshaft. The rear end of it connects to the shift lever. Undo the little clip on the side and slide the selector rod out of the lever. You may need to undo the clip at the front of the rod as well.

    Back up top, you can see the plastic bushing the ball of the lever sits in. Jam two flat head screwdrivers on opposite sides in the grooves along the bushing, and twist the whole thing 90 degrees/until it comes loose. The lever should now come out, with the bushing.

    Tada. Now put it all back together.

      If you need a DIY for changing the shifter, you are not an approved E30 owner...

                              Welcome to r3v. Where failure to use the search function will be duly punished.

                              I have the Z3 shifter. Don't even bother unless you replace the rest of the bushings, but even then expect to be underwhelmed.
