Now I know that this is in the wrong sextion but I have had no feedback in the correct section. So either noone here knows anything about automatic gearboxes (which i doubt) or that section of the forum is not to popular. I just wanna know if I am being scammed, because i dont know too much about these boxes. I was driving on the freeway and out of the blue I just lost all gears. When I came to a stop and tried to shift teh car just made a hissy gurgling noise. Too it too the shop and they say that water got into the gearbox from a leak in the radiator that when into the oil cooler. Now this radiator is only a year old and otherwise my car has a perfect service history with no major issues. Does this sound right because now I am stuck with a car that needs a new gearbox and a new radiator. This sucks big time.

Friend of mine had the same problem a while back. he lost all gears while driving his auto, and was given the same diagnosis. Don't know what caused it though, but he eventually just junked the car. sorry I couldn't be of help.
Oh and most people here are partial to manual trannies. just swapped mine :)Comment

I would think they're scamming you. How long did they look at your car to have come to that conclusion? Did you get to see them diagnose your car? I would have to think it would take them a long time to track the problem and look at your radiator.
Go to another shop and have it looked at. A few quotes won't hurt. It seems like a load of shit to me though.Current BMW's:

Why would it take a long time? How else would coolant get into the tranny? The trans cooler is built into the radiator.Originally posted by mphI would think they're scamming you. They had teh car for about a day. I got i new second hand gearbox from some junkers. Need to still make a plan about the radiator, will call my mechanic than installed it. Fuck this sucks. Even the dealers have told me I have the cleanest and best nick 318i they have ever seen. Might as well sell it to a museum.Comment

It would take me about 10min to figure that out. 9min to put up the car and 1min to drain the trans fluid and find green fluid in there. Of course you can always disconnect the transmission lines and put a presure tester on the coolant system to do a final check.Originally posted by mphI would think they're scamming you. Well It seemed that the car was leaking water into the oil cooler which is inside the radiator. Got that repaired because I didnt see how a new radiator could help if my year old one just did this. They bolting up the new second hand gearbox tommorrow, hoping for the best.Comment
