    need something straightened out

So I have a 91 318is with a 4.10 LSD and one of the side output flanges from the diff is rusted and cracked where two of the bolts go into the half hafts.

Now I know I can pop these out fairly easily and if I found a diff from the same car/318i that I could pop a new one in, however I have been told by some that I can use the side flanges from a medium case diff off a 6 cylinder car. And then others who said to do that I would have to use that cars half shafts, but I thought that all half shafts were interchangeable.

Just looking to clear up this confusion and if I can use any diff output flanges I'm gonna go to the junkyard today and get this all sorted out.

    Thanks
