So BMW is going to platform share with the MINI for their low end entry level stuff. Okay? What's the issue?

    get logic out of here.

    FWD. is the issue.

Smart cars are RWD. I'm not opposed to the turbo 3 if its more efficient for the daily commute. At this ponit BMW doesn't even offer a 4 cyl in the US. A 3 cyl $30k+ car is going to be a very hard sell.

Maybe if it was RWD and placed in the right orientation? Also, why not throw one more cylinder on there? Keep with tradition. (Think M10)

I have yet to meet a mini that will even keep pace with mine. I know they are out there, but I have not seen one yet

I think everyone here realizes the bottom-line is it's a a profit company.. and everyone knows they're trying to broaden their market. Excuse us for being shitty that a company we support, who has been building cars for the past 80+ years, has been successful on RWD & AWD platforms in the common market as well as multiple racing classes.

and the slogan "the ultimate driving machine" hardly even applies to half the shit they send out the door now.. millions of automatic 328's, the X6 and the new bloated 5er. ever notice how their marketing campaign is shifting to the "joy is ..." schtick?

if they arent taking away our beloved classics, who cares what they do? bottom line, people.. this is a car company.

I think its good that BMW is broadening their market appeal... I just hope the fundage they get from selling these will go towards something more 'proper'. I could see these being a decent success overseas, but here in the states, I don't see the market for a econo BMW. A lot of variables, but in the big scheme of things, I see this being a positive move for them... regardless of excessive criticism they will recieve from enthusiasts. These models do not deserve "The Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan.
