More ability to control bump steer. better control over camber gain. better anti roll adjustability, as live axles use the axle itself to retain anti-roll, you can use an adjustable sway bar to whatever specs you need.

Comparing weight between IRS and Solid axle is like comparing an apple with a bigger orange, and saying they all weigh the same.

^me too. I have driven irs equipped and solid axles mustangs( my 996 cobra has had both) and the only advantage the irs had over the solid with the panhard bar was that it behaved better when cornering on very rough surfaces.

IRS may be heavier but soild rear is loading the suspension with all of the rear drive componets where IRS it is only the tail shaft, hub, linkages and brakes that load the suspension. In a street setup there is not much differance but take it to the track and you will fail.

cobras from the factory with no suspension modifications wheel hop like a mutherpucker! throw a panhard rod under the rear and that transfers all the driveline vibration up to the body. it is irritating as hell. ask me how i know. yes, you can throw a shitload of money at the car and set the suspension up better, but why spend 50 grand(at the time, now more like 70) on a car that launches like shit with factory parts? its stoopid! normally, i love fords, but come (the hell) on guys. i have never experienced wheel hop with a bimmer.

last month when i was in south africa there is a company down there that build elenor replicas out of the new reproduction shells available, and they have developed and irs suspension for these based off of the e90 suspension. They were also in development on a similar suspension for the s197 chasis. It was a very interesting setup
