    m10b18 lower timing case nub

What is this nub that sticks out of the front timing case of the m10? I've never opened up an m10 so I'm not sure if a shaft or something goes into it from the opposite side.

This nub is in the way of my life and I cannot continue on with my daily activities without chopping it off. (for efi conversion on e21)

What is it, and can I cut it off?

I *think* that's the timing mark pointer (lines up with the mark on the crank pulley at TDC), AFAIK there's nothing on the backside that would prevent you from cutting it off.
