What is this strange button?

Howdy folks, new here but by no means new to the marque. Was a longtime member to Dtmpower.net(RacerJames666) but as most of you know it has gone down the shitter in recent times.

I managed to acquire an 84 318i with a blown out auto trans. It came with a rebult one (all this was free mind you) so im in the middle of that, but whilst admiring the uncracked dash and immaculate Sony explode deck from 2001, I happened across a strange button. Two position, with a red stripe around it when in the open position...any ideas??

Breaker for the Window circuit.

Markings on that button are most always gone..

Wrong. Child lock (rear door windows) is actually a square button on the left side in front of the driver door window switch.

Correct.

That's actually a circuit breaker. BMW didn't use relays in the window circuits. Full voltage/amperage flows through the window circuitry.

Oh reary? But there is no evidence of an alarm and I've never seen it light up.

Chances are its from an alarm that is or was installed. It might also be a dummy alarm light. I had one that was tied to the radio in an older car. Radio is off, LED blinked. Once a new radio was installed, they werent usually hooked back up though.

Yeah that is probably what it is. I need to pull it out and see if there are any wires to it. Thanks guys.
