My e30 is dying of rust and I've gotten to the point where i'm sick of working on it. I'm in the market for something different but I don't want an e30 since i already have another one as a project car. I'd like to stay in a BMW but I've always had a thing for Subarus, plus I'd like having a wagon to haul stuff around in as well as the AWD for winter. Are there any years/models that I should stay away from? My price range is $4500 max. Just browsing CL i've found a few in that range that look alright.

ive grown up with subaru's and they are awesome cars. they are not the best for gas milage but they are freaking tanks, built like lego's, and are extremely easy to work on.
only thing to watch out for is the 2.5 engine thats n/a that comes in the outbacks from 96-04 and the foresters from 98-04. they have headgasket issues (leak oil externally) but if someone has already done the HG's then its nothing to worry about.

I miss my old swapped vf34'd impreza L; sold it for tuition. My girlfriend has a swapped 2.5RS (gc) and it's awesome.
I got the e30 because it was cheaper and i was tired of taking the bus after 3 years (3 hours a day).
Will definitely build another GC after I graduate

absolutely stay away from the 2.5rs... you'd be better off with a ej20t swapped gc. or just a bugeyed rex.. I have always been a subby guy until i got in an accident and bought my e30 though I plan on buying another gc impreza for my winter car. the 2.2 liter engines are incredibly reliable and the newer 2.0 liter wrx engines are also very reliable, though you can not beat the 2.2 for its structural integrity. The 2.5's will crack or blow a head gasket, they're awful. If you can find one the best thing to do for the money is get an ej22t out of a 1989-1994 turbo legacy and throw it in a gc impreza. I had a friend that drove one of these until 300k and until he got in an accident, and it was still running. Other than that, a bugeyed rex is not out of your budget so you might be best off saving yourself the trouble and grabbing one of those.Last edited by mcgillaguddy; 05-17-2011, 12:46 PM.1988 M6 - The real project.
