    Shipping a 24v motor questions

    Has anyone here done it? Any input? I plan on making a crate out of a pallet cut down to 3'x3' as the base, put a 3'x3' piece of plywood on the bottom, secure the motor to the base, and build the walls out of 2x4 and more plywood.

    Then I would create a roof, and nail/strap it all down nice and secure.

    I figured all said and done, the motor'd crate will weight somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 lbs since I'm leaving the flywheel and clutch included. I am however shipping without the wiring harness which saves me a good 20 lbs or so.


    Question: What is the s50b30us engine weight (dry) with all accessories?

    Who else has done this and any suggestions? Suggested shipping companies?

    Any advise is much appreciated.

    I remember seeing the official weights of engines posted here but I cannot find it using the search tool.

    Used in E39 520i/523i/528i, E36 323i/328i, E38 728i, Variation of this was used in late US E36 M3.
    2.0 (150bhp), 2.5 (170bhp), 2.8 (193bhp), 3.2 (240bhp) Sometimes referred to as S52US. Engine shares more common parts with M52 than Euro S52, but is a motorsport engine.

      Hmm so along the lines of 400lbs is more reasonable after the crate is built and the motor is stripped of fluids completely.

            If you're shipping it via truck freight, they don't care about exact weight, it will get rounded up to the next 100 lbs.

            So, if it's 405 lbs (for example), you pay for 500 lbs.

            Don't forget to include the weight of the pallet + crate.

            Also, beware of crazy high fuel surcharges that most trucking companies now have in place. I recently got a shipment at work and the fuel surcharge was 35%.

              Go find a warehouse or something and buy a spare pallet off them, way easier than building one.

              Get some big straps and strap it to the pallet. Bang, done.

              Obviously, no fluids and I would put down some type of absorbent material underneath the engine on the pallet just in case. If anything seeps out and damages other goods, ugh, you don't want to deal with that.

                No I already have a pallet. Home depot graciously donated it to me without knowing and for that, I'm grateful.

                Any freight companies used to ship?

                I'll have to look into this.

                      Call around and ask. Tell them "I've got a 500lb pallet, nothing can be stacked on, I need to ship it "dock-to-dock" from Sacramento to XXXXXXX. What's your price?"

                      Best thing to call the shipping companies, ask for "dock-to-dock" or "terminal-to-terminal" shipping. Meaning, you will take the pallet in the back of a truck to the shipping companies nearest dock, they will unload with a forklift and ship. When the buyer shows up at his dock, they will load the pallet into his truck with a forklift.

                      Shipping this way isn't too expensive.

                      It's when you ask the companies to do house-to-house and they need the machine/time to get it on/off the truck, and from/to a garage that shipping things like this become more expensive.

                      Also, freight costs will be more determined by how busy the route is vs how far it has to go. So sometimes it's actually cheaper to ship big freight farther. I know when I sold my S52 package last year, shipping it to Newark, NJ would have been cheaper than where it did go in Colorado.

                        WRONG, i shipped a pallet with my m42 on it 316lbs I think, and was charged for that amount not more...


                        Also, drain all fluids, and see if you can ship it as parts, usually cheaper...

                          Try yellow freight, I've had decent luck as a "walk in" with them. If you have any friends who's work ships stuff by truck often and you could get them to send it using their rate it would be cheaper than you could get just calling and asking for a one time quote.

                          Your plan to build the crate sounds good, but just strapping it to a pallet then covering everything exposed with a few layers of cardboard and stretch wrap and throwing some straps over that will probably work just as well, and if its odd shaped less chance of shit getting stacked on it. It's going to be sitting on a pallet either way so the oil pan and stuff on the bottom is the most likely thing to get damaged taking a fall or something, maybe try to throw a couple layers of carpet pad or something down and make sure to sit it some way that it's stable.

                              You can think that if you like, but trust me, trucking companies do NOT break charges down to less than 100 lb increments. 316 lbs cost the same as 399 lbs.




                              If you want to get the cheapest rate, tell them that it's a "core" engine, or "scrap", but beware that if you do this and the shit gets smashed or lost along the way, you'll only be able to claim the low value for it in any claim against the trucking company.
