    E30 letting water in trunk

    Hello,

i noticed today that there was water in my trunk around the taillights, in the taillights and moisture on the inside of the boot lid. What could be letting water in? i've searched almost everything, checked the sunroof channels etc. Please help.

Also found some moisture on the inside of the front windscreen which also means there is a water leak around that area, I've checked the elephant trunk and that was clear, please help.

    thanks heaps!

Tail lights have a rubber gasket that likes to dry overtime and this is
most likely your problem. Just buy some new one and swap them.

      Are they rubber or foam?

They are a foam. When I had a body shop replace the taillights cause a lady hit me they tried to cheat and use RTV. I had the same issues. I bought the new gaskets and it cured the problem. bavauto.com
Correction the OEM ones are a rubber thick gasget. I had to get after market ones that come with the foam.

Fair enough, i just ordered a couple from the local BMW dealers. Are there any other common spots on the e30 that let water in?

          cheers.

The actual trunk seal. Antenna hole. fuel door.

You probably need new gaskets. Taillights, trunk lid, and antenna grommet (?). I did the taillight gaskets and the trunk lid gasket, as well as clear silicone calk around the taillight housings themselves (between the clear and not clear plastics - that's where water was coming in), and it's been dry ever since.

awesome! i'll do that tonight, i'm using the z3 antenna and i think that grommet is letting water in because there was water around it on the inside. What about under the rear seat?

                  sunroof drains!
tap your tail lights and see if water is inside those.
pull the carpet up in spots and see if you can see where water is comming in.

my first e30 would FLOOD. sun roof drains were clogged and trunk seal was fucked. fixed both and fixed problem.

                  btw, this is VERY common

                      I had a similar problem.

I replaced the trunk seal, tail light seals, the attenna grommet, and made sure my drains were not clogged, still leaked! So I took the bumper off and investigated.

The body vent was leaking not only through the seal # 9, but the rubber flap as well.

FYI when you order one of these vents or seals, they have to come from the fatherland. If you do order these from the dealer, they can rush them so you get them in a week, not a month.

Also new vents come with new seals, so you don't need to order them too.

I narrowed it down I my back windshield leaking. I would have water running in from the top. After replacing almost every seal, I got in the trunk with flash light and a friend outside eth a hose. Glad he let me out haha.

Ive also battled the moisture and my problem ended up being from the metal edge where the boot seal presses onto. From spending so much time working in the boot doing this

I had leant on the boot rubber and slightly bent the lip down in places.

Got a rubber mallet and tapped it up to straighten in and neaten it up and made a big difference.
