Lots of good advice , Id like to add putting a couple hundred pounds in the trunk really makes a difference in traction.

If you dont have many hills just get a LSD and good snow tires and the car is cake to drive. You will be fine. Steep hills are a different story though.

I drove around with falken 912s, 195/65/14 and a 3.73 in seattle. Granted I had help up some hills but for the most part with smart driving I was VERY surprised at how far I got.

I will be driving around the PNW with my E30 in the snow this year. I plan on getting real snow tires, some chains, and a couple sand bags. I do have a 4.10 LSD in the rear. Wish me luck.

I bought my 318is 5 years ago just to drive in the winter while my Touring was in storage. It's lowered, has generic no name snows on the stock 14" weaves - drives like a jeep, I've had no issues with Ontario winters. I also get the car oiled every year, and touch up any rust before it gets nasty - it still has most of it's original paint.

e30's are great winter beaters - just drive them with respect. Four snows are a must.

At the beginning of next year I will be moving from Socal to Flagstaff for school and I found lots of good info in this thread.

Good snow tires, a slammed E30 and a Volvo lip snowplow FTW!!

Studded blizzaks in the rear and non studded in the front, LSD preferred of course...I drove mine lowered with that set up and no power steering for several winters in Colorado. I even took it up to Breckenridge, over mountain passes and through ski resorts, never had one bit of a problem....granted, my idea of "driving" in the snow is more like "being a f#@$ing danger to society"...so my opinion is partial I suppose.

springs??? 195/60/16's tires aught to give you 2-3"'s if they fit the wheel well, then you might have issues with snow build up if there too big. I got some old 195/70/14 snows that are real tall.

yeah I measured the wheel I have on there and the new ones their about a inch and a half taller so itd raise it up half of how much bigger it is, so 3/4ths of an inch but I still think my car will only be about 3 inches from the cat converter fully raised and with the tires :/
