Anybody know a good shipping service ? for sending engines etc
try forward air. I ship a lot of motors and these guys are consistently less. Its dock to dock though so you have to go to the freight terminal to pick up and drop off. They will do a liftgate but its like 50 or 75 bucks. EAD
i used to use forward air, but they are a real pain in the butt. unless you have an account, which is apparently difficult to get, they make you drop off the freight to be weighed, tell you the price, then you go find a money order some where, and finally come back and pay. it has been my experience that they are quite expensive compared to other carriers and not worth the effort imho. i have been using aaa cooper but they are regional and mostly in the south. i recently sent an ix engine to utah from houston and the cost was around 270.00 which i thought was pretty good since it needed to be interlined with another carrier.

Does anybody know which company I should go through when trying to get a engine shipped over to me ? Please and thanks ,
-Brian
What level of service are you looking for? Will you be securing the engine to a pallet and shipping from a loading dock... or is this something that needs to be picked up at your house?
If you take care of the the shipment prep and are shipping loading dock to loading dock you ought to be able to ship pretty much anywhere in the country for less than $400 if you deal directly with the carriers.
I'm assuming Broward County, FL? If so, try contacting these carriers:
Southeastern Freight Lines
R&L Gator
ABF
Estes Express
All 4 of those carriers probably also offer lift gate and residential services if you are shipping from your home at an additional cost. Make sure you get a quote ahead of time and have them send you the quote in writing before shipping. The absolute worst thing that can happen with a common carrier is for you to ship on open tariff, which is typically 3 times a quoted rate.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me a PM.
as for everyone else thanks for the info , My situation basically is im trying to buy a engine and have it shipped over to me. Hes selling it for 500 and is saying that it would be more then 1,000 or just about that to be shipped to me . Its on a pallet and ready , And i dont expect it to be shipped to my house . It can be shipped to a friends shop
generally, shipping to a commercial address with a loading dock is the same price as pick up at the shipping terminal. the only way the shipping would cost a grand, i assume, would be that the seller quoted a price for the carrier to come and pick it up at his residence. if he can load it in a pickup and take it to the terminal, it should be 1/3 of that.

Shipping an engine could easily cost a grand, if you don't know how the system works.
Less than Truckload carrriers, or Common Carriers, are required to file tariffs with the government every year. These tariffs set their prices for the year, and deviating from those prices would get them in hot water with Washington. So.. If you call up to a common carrier and ask for a quote on shipping an engine, you are most likely getting the tariff price.
To get around these high prices common carriers began offering volume discounts to their customers. Anyone not in the industry would probably be surprised to learn that most freight is discounted anywhere from %60-80 on average. I know my company has %65 and %75 discounts with a few carriers that we use, and we're very small. So, if you were to call my company, or any freight broker, and leverage our discount you could turn that $1000 bill easily into something less than $400.
Consider yourself somewhat educated on the subject matter.
So to get a good price you go through a freight broker and have them deal with the carrier?
not necessarily, to get a good price you have to go through a company that has an account with a trucking company and has a big discount and is willing to pass the savings on to you.
Could be where you work, could be a friend of a friend, could be a freight broker/forwarder.
It pays to shop around.
It seems like most trucking companies now have fairly large fuel surcharges- I recently got a pallet of stuff at work and the freight bill had a 40% fuel surcharge added on- so make sure you get the bottom dollar price or you could be in for a big surprise when it comes time to pay.
