Mine shows 3/4 all the time, when it gets low on fuel, the needle starts jumping, then a while after that the light comes on. On track days it looks like its showing lateral G's or something.
Weird shit but I just fill up when the light comes on.

yeah everybody here is saying they have 11 gallon tanks.....i'm pretty sure 5toes is right, it's 16.

          87e30 you get 150-170 miles a tank?!!!! that's shit! that's not 19mpg, that's like 11mpg at best.

i have an m50 w/ 4.10 lsd and i get ~240 miles to the tank, but the PO said he got 300 miles to the tank...so i thought something was wrong with my car (i was about to replace my o2 sensor but i decided to recharge my intake so i'm in the process of recording my gas mileage now)

Well poop I thought my tank was ~10 gallons. And since my gas gauge quit working when I went 24v (annoying coincidence) I have just been refilling every 150 miles to be safe, because I went to 190 miles or so once and my car felt as if I were out of gas. But I am only putting in about 7-8 gallons only. And by calculation getting ~19mpg no matter how I'm driving.

Weird... I've driven my car till when the light comes on and it only gets to about 11 gallons before it clicks (topping off means gasoline spillage).

I usually get about 250-270 miles before the gas light comes on.

                maybe it's an early/late thing?

PS how are you getting such good mileage from an s50? Maybe it is my crappy gearing (g260+3.73)

Has to be a early/late I would assume ... I'm running a zf trans and less aggressive gearing with 3.46's

Not all tanks are the same according to this spec sheet:

Says some have 14.5 Gallon tanks and some have 16.4 Gallons.

why not carry a gas carrier in the trunk, reset your trip meter when you fill it up then drive until it starts puttering? That'll tell you an exact amount of miles you get on a tank

I'd rather not start sputtering in the middle of no where.

And actually a 3.46 and zf is pretty similar to the 260 and 3.73 I'd think. Freshly rebuilt top end, new plugs, and emissions passing o2 sensor would have me think everything is running fine. Must be a lead foot thing. I've only had the s50 a short time.

Think outside the box dude... imagine driving up a hill in a big city like seattle in traffic and magically pop out of gas. Sure you can pull over and fill up... but how easy is that going to be on a hill full of trafic when you're going somewhere and in a hurry.

I'll let you go ahead and try out that one.
