Anyone ever replaced an early-90's Ford Explorer fuel pump?

Like the title says, anyone ever done this? I'm replacing the fuel pump on my grandma's '94 (shop wants $800!), and everything I've found says you have to drop the fuel tank, which according to all the write-ups, doesn't sound TOO awful, I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this particular job.

I can find out tomorrow, a guy at the shop has had a few explorers.

I can tell you flat backing out a gas tank is not very fun. If you have an extra external fuel pump, you can put some fuel hose on it to get it to the bottom of the tank and pump out any excess gas.

Reconnecting the filler neck can be a pita too.

I'm going to try and get a friend or two to help me, so that might make things a little easier.

Never done a explorer, but I have done several Tahoes, and yeah laying on your back dropping the tank and getting all the shit back in place SUCKS.

They are a pain in the ass to drop the tank its not that hard of a job over all

It's no biggie. I use a floor jack with a chunk of plywood on it to help lower/raise the tank into position. As der affe mentioned it's a big help if the tank has a minimal amount of gas in it. An impact gun and some aerosol penetrant make the tank strap hardware a breeze. Depending on the fuel line fittings you may need a Ford fuel line tool to release them from the nipples on the pump, they're like $2 at an auto parts store. Also be careful to position the harness and fuel lines in a way that they wont get pinched and chaff on something as you raise it back up.

Oh, and you're going to get some dirt in your eyes and mouths so have some beers handy to wash it out with.

Mustangs are the same way. In tank fuel pump and you have to drop the tank. I did it by myself when I was in college and didn't have money to pay anyone. I wouldn't imagine it being much more difficult on an explorer.

Did it on my 92 last year.

Worst part was dropping the skid plate, of course if it isnt 4x4 you wont have that.

DONT buy an airtex brand pump!

Best advise in this thread, if you are saving the money by doing it yourself, you should push for an OEM Ford unit. make sure you have all the extras you may need, like a new filter, and strainer.
