Still haven't gotten my wheel bearing out.
Been trying all day. Had to finally give up.
Started the day well - bought the 30mm 12 pt. socket that has thin enough walls to fit on the nut. Andy (KillerCalypso) and I dined on the finest Taco Bell this side of the border.
First attempt was the driver's side. Not the bad bearing, but I wanted to do both just in case. Couldn't get the nut off. Finally had to give up and try the other side. Had better luck this time and broke the nut loose.
Disassembly went well - caliper, rotor, driveaxle. Then we get to the hub.
That hub is in there GOOD. First we tried a slide hammer, as recommended by Gillany. No love - we both hammered away at it for hours, barely any progress. Finally we give up and walk away.
I get a call from Mark (wastedincome420), asks me how things went. I explained we still couldn't get the hub off.
He asks if I was using the expensive BavAuto tool he was so kind to let me borrow. I said I wasn't, because I was under the impression that the tool was for the bearing only. He laughs and tells me that the tool is for the hub AND the bearing - when he got to this part, it was that same hub that he couldn't get off, and that's what made him go out and buy the tool.
Words of wisdom - that tool is comPLETELY worth the price. It's not coming off if you don't buy that or have someone do it. And good luck on the axle nut - easy to strip.
Thanks Andy for all the help, and a few rides in the "real" Killer Calypso ;)
And Danny Gillany, appreciate the phone support. You were there in spirit.
Andy will post pictures if he sobers up :) If not, some time this week...
