DIY auto tranny fluid flush and change?

I was just wonder is it safe to do this in my 195,XXX miles e36? i heard by replacing the fluid in a high mileage tranny can screw it.

Usually the problems come from adding fluid to a gearbox that has leaked dry. I've had a lot of cars come in for a trans service and pulled the plug to find it is dry-- one or two drops fall out and then nothing.. Every time I've filled one of those up there were problems.

My own G260 was dry and shifted perfectly [dry]. Added fluid and my number 2 synchro immediately started grinding when shifted 1st-to-2nd. number 4 also fought a bit into gear. I've seen others completely fail (one was stuck in first and reverse..).

But if you actually have fluid in the trans, drain it, and fill with new fluid you should be alright. Should be.. bad fluid still hides issues sometimes.

from what I was reading on the explorer forums I belong to, it doesnt really break the tranny flushing the fluid. what happens I guess is the new fluid (ATF is highly concentrated with detergents I guess) loosens up a lot of shit built up in the tranny and that flows around clogging all the tiny little openings and tubes etc.

What I was told to do was change the fluid completely (my explorer has a fill/drain plug on the torque converter) change the tranny filter as well. Then drive for like 250-500 miles and do it again. The first change will loosen all the shit up and you will drain it out before it has any real chance to clog shit up.

        Hope that helps
