    1985 Cluster Photo

Hey guys first time buyer of a 1985 325E and the the PO said the cluster has been out twice and the speedo/odo/temp gauges go haywire sometimes.

Driving around the speedoo works and the temp gauge seems to be alright but the odometer is no bueno.

Also the PO stated that the cluster on the vehicle now is not the right one due to it having "Brake Lining" and "Oil Service/Inspection" lights. I searched ebay for the proper cluster and there are two types...one with the words "Oil Service/Inspection" and one without

Any help here? Photos would be appreciated

Please let me know if you need any more info

Cheers and glad to be here!

I have an 84 325e with oil service/inspection on it. VDO unit. I think you need to get the brand and coding plug correct or else sh!t will go haywire. My 87 has a mototronic unit ill post a pic.

^^Both of those are from an 87 325

you will need a cluster for an 85 and back. The 86 and up clusters have a code plug up front, and the 85 and back have a "stick" in the back. Ill get pictures once im home later to show what im talking about.

Here is the two different clusters. Top two pictures are for 1985 and back. Then the last two are for 86 and up. I put a circle around the code stick on the first one and circle on the code plug on the 2ed one. This is an easy way to tell them apart.

1985 and back cluster. Note no code plug on the front.

1986 and up cluster, note no code stick in the back.

                Awesome thanks!

So it an 85 and older cluster but the Speedo/Odo don't work and the temp gauge goes wacky sometimes...not good since I think I have a blown head gasket (white smoke, heating issues)

I hope the Temp gauge wire is easy to spot, where does it route to on the engine?

Also, I heard the speedo is attached as a sensor to the rear diff...whereabouts by chance?

                Cheers fellas!

Connector with the rubberboot facing the rear of the vehicle I assume correct?

Either way it had to have been correct since I unplugged it, WD40 bathed, and reconnected and now the speedo works like a champ

                      Thanks everyone!
