If its gonna be your DD for a long time, and you want to worry about 0 issues, have cold/perfect ac at all times, have everything be nice and new, and have a car that outtracks roughly 80% of the e30 population right out of the door, go with the GTI. If you want to please all the people who say 318 just because they own an e30 and refuse to be open minded, get the bimmer.
In for "fwd sucks" "its a girls car" "vw is mexican" "im this old, and i DD my e30 with no problems and i love it and people love me which makes me love myself more and more every day" comments.
The driving feel of a 318is> GTI. However, everything else about the GTI > 318is
I was looking at one for a DD, but the steering felt vague under normal conditions, and torque steer was horrible. Plus, the DWB and turbo lag make it feel even more disconnected...
It's a good, practical car though.. would probably pick it over a civic, mazda3 etc if I had to get a car in that segment

What GTI were you driving? The 2011's "diff" does really good to avoid torque steer. Also, turbo is fully spooled at 1,500 or so, I wouldn't call that turbo lag. Maybe the older gens were worse?
As far as modern cars go GTIs are incredibly fun to drive and have a fantastic engine note. But e30 is better looking, and there would be no car payments witch always draws my attention.

2010 with DSC. Maybe it wasn't so much lag as it was delay in throttle response. Still, putting around the city, u press in the gas, wait a second, then feel the power kick in, something I don't like. Despite electronics, it's still gonna have most of the characteristics of an FWD.
If u value steering feel, connectedness, and driving dynamics overall, I'd still go with the e30.
Interesting driving impressions. I drove a 2009 and 2011 and never once thought there was a lag in response. The steering was awesome too with the speed sensitive steering system. *shrug*
The 4 door GTI is one of the best bang for buck cars there is. The performance/safety/mpg/comfort/useable space, etc. If you've driven both I'm surprised this is even an decision.
