Been following this storm since the low became a tropical depression on The Weather Channel & via the Natl. Hurricane Center (www.nhc.noaa.gov) . I've had my fair share of tropical storms right up to strong cat. 4 hurricanes with freak wind gusts. Houses in my area were purposed-built for hurricanes and yet there could always be some damage expected.

Concerning The Weather Channel/media hype, well that may be so to some extent. Point is, there is a lot of passivity when it comes to hurricane preparedness among those who have experienced hurricanes- let alone "first-timers"... The majority of our R3V'ers from the Carolinas or Georgia/Florida living in their home states or in the NE should be quite accustomed to storms. In this respect Irene is indeed minimal compared to others in the past (ie. Hugo in '89 comes to mind). Quite concerned for the remainder of R3V'ers north however. To continue the broken record the big cities and New England area are generally not prepared for hurricane force storms. Remaining downtown doesn't make it any easier. Heed the advice peeps.

and have you experienced a nice earthquake yet? :) not to mention droughts, wildfires, mudslides (when it does actually rain)...

don't get me wrong, i love LA and grew up there, but it definitely isn't without its own problems.

dude the rain here in MD is soooo much worse than anything i experienced in socal.
the thing is, MD seems better suited to handle it. so you notice it less.

my plan tonight, drink some brews and watch some rain go sideways...YEAH BUDDY

I'm in Jersey and we are getting rained on but the wind is still not bad. I'm hoping it stays that way.
