Find a car that is not complete shit to drive on it, renting cars over there was a pain in the ass, and we ended up with a 2004 4.2L V8 VW Phaeton.

Next time I go i'm buying a cheap e30, ringing it, and dumping it :p

The 'ring is great, but if you're going for a week, there's plenty of other things to do. I'd definitely spend a couple of days in Munich, do all the BMW Museums- and see if Mobile-Tradition is offering tours or anything- set this up in advance if you can.

Renting a car is no problem- not sure what Crivellone is talking about. We rented thru Hertz, picked up at the Frankfurt train station, and returned it at a small Hertz office near the German/Austrian border where we got on a train- there was no additional charge for dropping it off at a different location than where we picked it up. It's been a couple of years, but we rented a Nissan Primera 16v sedan- it was brand new when we picked it up- something like 8km on it!! After we got about 1/2 way thru our first lap of the 'ring, my wife said "something's burning".....I told her it was just the engine, and it was a rental!!!!! I think the cosmoline shit was burning off the valve cover.

Try to find out before you go if the 'ring will be open for public lapping, it's frequently booked for private testing by car mags and auto manufacturers. If it is open, it's just like the old VW TV commercial- you drive up, pay a guy some $$$ (or actually, Euros) and he waves you on....before you know it, you're one one of the most famous tracks in the world!!!

Damn, I want to go back soon..............

Make sure you check out local rental laws in regards to whther you can or can't run that particular rental companies' car at the 'Ring. My sister lived in Austria this year for school, and she was NOT able to drive her leased Peugot 507 on the track. I'm not 100% sure, but it would suck if you were not allowed to run it because of failure to check the regs.
