I've had one and wanted many...

Be VERY careful about rust. They didn't galvanize the steel to save money, so they are notorious for rust problems. I'm lucky to have the Porsche 914 experts in my back yard (well, if I still owned one that is).

Very good advise so far. Rust is the death of these cars. Look hard for one that is not too bad. Rockers and suspension consoles can rust in half and turn your car into a 2 part 914.
As far as everyone saying get a 911. I have two 911's, one is a lightweight slot car but even still the 914 is a better handling car out of the box. It can not keep up with the 911 but if you know that you can certainly enjoy it for what it is.Truthfully to me the weak spot is brakes. They are not super IMO.
Very few parts work from VW. Parts that run up cost quick are rubber parts (can get to 1K if replacing all) and they are not VW at all. Suspension can be upgraded quickly by robbing 911's.

If you can find a Real 6 those are the ones that are going to skyrocket in value.

And do not use AA for anything other than parts and expect service to suck. Experts or not they are very much despised in the 914 circles.

there is one local to me with the box flares and an sti motor.

probably the best non porsche swap motor for the car.

as far as the expense of the seals, yes, they arew very expensive. the worst part is you can buy all new seals and they still leak water :(

you can up grade the brakes, with a carerra front swap including the beam (aluminium VS steel) the arms and spindles and end up with 4 piston brembo brakes. you can also bolt in a mercedes benz master cyl that is larger and weld a nut and bolt to the beam infront of the master cylinder to stop the flex in the floor where it is mounted.

that is one of the probems with the braking is the mounting point flexes and some of the braking force from your foot is lost.

you should be warned that they are not cheap because they are still a PORSCHE, if you go into it with a "it's just VW mentality" you will quickly drain your bank account and you will be nowhere near a complete car.

Meh...I've had the opportunity to deal with a couple of them & the overall driving experience is 'Meh' at best.

I also have to definitely suggest avoiding Automobile Atlanta, the owner is widely known to rip people off to various extremes.

S54B32 swap in progress. Status: Getting There

I would visit 914world and see if you can get the parts used. For rubber I would use the dealer or 914rubber.com.Poke around at 914world and you will see alot of folks willing to help out.
