BMW & MBZ history in WWII

Hey friends, I am doing a presentation for my Aviation class & I picked up an interest in how BMW & MBZ was involved in the war, when they created air planes, and their switch to automobiles when the war demanded less warcrafts. I heard this was false and that they had no part at all with the war, but Im having trouble looking for credible sources to cite from. Discuss :)

            Found that..

" Gustav Otto's Flugzenmaschinenfabrik (Airplane Factory) in Munich merged with Karl Rapp's Flugwerke Deutschland on March 7, 1916 to become the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (Bavarian Airplane Works) "

Didn't they make the switch because they were forced to due to the treaties? And those factories were retooled to do anything to keep producing, they were probably making silverware and steains for a while.

They made plane ENGINES in WWI and WW2. No, the Roundel is NOT a fucking propeller, and yes, they were banned from making war machines after WWI, as was all of Germany, but they restarted in WW2.

There is a Junkers tri-engine plane in the Air and Space Museum in DC with 3 BMW engines from WW2.

They made prototype engines for the Me 262 jet.

I think there is also mention of bmw and MB in Albert Speer's first book. After all he was the minister of armorments in the latter half of WWII.

What exactly are you looking for? Specs? Production numbers?

I need to present and cite a presentation on BMW & or MBZ's participation in Aviation. So I was thinking of presenting the historic facts of how it all started, and what they produced, when they got out of the aero space production, & production numbers and models of planes. If I can't gather enough information, I can drop this project.. Im just interested because this is something I can actually be enlightened about driving an e30 and all. lol

Ive seen BMW marine engines too.. not related I guess

The roundel was used in an old Ad from 1929 and the roundel can be seen in the spinning propellers of the plane, but was this roundel design used BEFORE that ad as well? It really does look like a prop spinning in the sky so its kinda a weird coincidence that it just "happened" to look good on the front of an airplane for that ad.

BMW mostly did engines for both WW1 and WW2, BMW motors powered most FW190 fighters (bmw 801,with over 61k built in several configurations), and the BMW 003 was used for the Heinkel He162 (less than 500 motors built though).

Mercedes doesnt seem to make any aircraft engines after WW1, however Daimler Benz does indeed make engines during WW2, and iin fact did up through the jet era. The information is out there, you just need a good place to find it.

It's the Bavarian flag, backwards, as state symbols cannot be trademarked in De. The roundel part is taken from the old Rapp symbol.

The airplane crap comes from that 1920s ad, where they were referring to their heritage. That add was made well after BMW was established and using the roundel.

They produced the BMW R75, one of the most used motorcycles by the Wehrmacht. Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes produced the engines for the BF109, one of the most mass produced planes ever. Also the BF110, the long range heavy fighter and later night fighter.

The FW190 as was said before used engines made by BMW usually, or Jumo for the D's. The BMW engines were some of the few radial engines used by the Luftwaffe on fighters.
