OP,
As far as the lower hose leaking, you may want to check the motor mounts. On early model e30s, when a motor mount goes, the power steering pully cuts through the lower coolant hose causing a pretty hefty leak. I am not sure if newer models have this problem, but it may be something to look at. You probably won't be able to replace the mounts there if they are bad. You will need a jack and a piece of wood in addition to whatever tools you may need to replace the mounts. They come out and go in fairly easy if you jack the motor up correctly.

i was on realoem looking at the m20 cooling system and couldn't figure out where hose #12 and #19 are connected to. going back and looking at the picture he sent me, look like those two hoses shown in the picture are water hose, seem like they were bypass. anybody with a m20 want to help me out? Are those two hoses #12 and #19?
