I did something similar to this three years ago when my father visited. We picked up 7 years old Chevy Venture with ~90.000 miles, hoping that we would be able to stay under 100.000 at the end of the trip (sell it for good moneyz).
Well, we came to the west coast from the east coast, then went back to the east coast. Then I moved to the west coast a month later with the same van, so the mileage went way above 100.000 when I sold it.

There were some key things we were looking for in the car:

    - Fairly new (had to be reliable)
    - Under 100.000 miles at the end of the trip (good resale value)
    - Purchased from dealer (was great decision because right as we were ready to leave the day after the purchase one of the half shafts gave in. Even though it was an "as is" sale, the dealer replaced both half shafts and CV joints for no charge)
    - Had to be a minivan (we put a mattress in the back and slept in it numerous times at in camps -- no messy tent stuff and a really convenient setup)

I'll come back if anything else comes to mind.

Buy an e21 for a roadtrip! I recommend foing from Cali to NY though.. because then you can buy a Cali car, which will sell for more on the east coast
