I have an M535i. Love it to fucking death. It's a beautiful car that always attracts a lot of attention and it drives magnificently too. The level of comfort and refinement are far beyond that of an E30 - but you must of course be aware that they are completely different cars. The E28 is an amazing grand tourer. On fast, flowing roads, there's nothing better and that's where the chassis and M30 come together perfectly.
With a competent steerer, they're not to be sneezed at on the track either. My car is completely standard, but I'm faster in it than others in much faster, modern BMW's. Last track day out I was quite pleased to see I was half a second faster than an E92 M3!
In summary, go forth with an open mind and take one for a nice, long test drive. One of two things will happen. You'll either fall in love with it and buy it....or you won't.
