Volvo's. The Volvo scene (both old school RWD, and newer FWD) is incredibly big, and growing.

1991 BMW 318i (Old Shell RIP, Now Being Re-shelled & Reborn)
    1983 Peugeot 505 STI
    1992 Volvo 240 Wagon
    2009 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Sport 4WD

I believe this is what you are looking for. Sweet car, but the build time is crazy.

Did you really just compare the FWD bastard-child of BMW to an E30?

Take an e30, restore it fully, drop in a 24v and you have the modern day car without all the electronic bullshit.

You don't mention your budget or what era you're looking for.

The cars that are closest to the E30 in spirit are going to be things like the MkII Golf GTI 16v, Sentra SE-R, and Civic SI. And, of course, the W201 Mercedes (especially the 190E 2.3-16).

Then you've got your more odd-ball choices, like the Saab 900 Turbo, Peugeot 405 Mi16, and Merkur XR4Ti.

Don't forget the AWD rally specials: various Evos and Subarus. The GC8 chassis 2.5 RS is very close to an E30 when you consider performance, price, practicality, reliability, and aftermarket support.

Yes. It has been been compared before

Sorta quick, nimble, lightweight, BMW (ish).. the cars are quit similar. Except when it comes to FWD / RWD

If you don't want an E30, go for her sexy sister the S30. I'm telling you, 240Z, 260Z or 280Z. MASSIVE following, almost all parts are now reman'd plus OEM still available from dealer, plus HUGE performance upgrade part market, oh yeah and most of all, bad ass little machines. Or you can go 280ZX, or even 300ZX. They are all badass.

The only problem is you'll want to quit life and just drive, constantly, always.

                      EDIT:
                      PS
Re-read the title saying 'new cars' so I must add, fuck new cars, they are ALL pieces of shit, I've only ever seen people have problems with them, and when something little goes wrong on a new car, it costs 500 dollars, if the same thing were to go wrong on an old car it costs 50 or less, oh yeah and it takes a fraction of the time and knownledge and tools and digging through electrical bullshit :)

I guess the other problem I was thinking of today is that newer cars dont have the classic features I like about e30s or older vehicles...oh well
