You must fully remove all traces of dat rust. It will regrow if you don't get all of it gone. Seriously, it really is cancer for cars. Nip it in the bud early (now) and it's easier to get rid of. Wait, ponder, masturbate around with it and it will be too late and you'll be parting out a rusted hulk.

People like the "por" stuff. I think it's called po-15 or something. Since your car is black, I'd clean the rust up till you are down to metal, and hit it some rust-stop black primer in that spot till you re-paint.

If you really want to be getto, smear some Vaseline on it - that will stop it for a while. Slammin.e28guy usually has a big tub of it you can borrow.

That started from inside the car ( trunk area ), the only way to truly get rid of it is to cut it out and weld new metal in. Then you have to seal both sides before you paint.

You can bandaid it with POR15 ( must be done correctly from BOTH SIDES ) but it's not what I'd call a permanent repair.

Grind rust off. patch if necessary, clean with DuPont 214s metal stabilizing cleaner (on both sides). After you clean it the metal should have a blueish kinda color, tht should tell you that it's ready for etching primer, follow with a good quaility 2k primer, DuPont has one tht after shooting it take an hour to dry i think it 4904s or 7704s. Then just sand and paint.

How I've taken care of small rust spots on previous cars is wire wheel down to bare metal. If the rust is already rotted through there's only so much you can do but I've had decent success in the past using a rust disolver you can buy at any auto parts store. After a few coats of that, should turn blackish/blue, hit it with some etching primer. Then I've used epoxy or fiberglass resin to fill in any imperfections left, sand smooth and paint.

This was in the roof of my old Cherokee.

This is after wire wheeling and a few coats of disolver.

                Primed

Small sheet of fiberglass mat and resin

Second layer of resin and some sanding

                Bit of filler

Sanded (another layer of filler and sanding but you get the point)

Done. Well, a bit more finish sanding was needed but whatever.

Can't find pictures of it painted but I did this 2 years ago, sold the Cherokee to a friend and there isn't a trace of rust in that corner still. I'm not saying this is the best or easiest way to "fix" rust but it's worked well for me in the past.
