Best way to prep/protect for a 1k mi trip in the winter?

I'm planning on delivering my car to LA in late December. I'll hopefully be taking I-5 the entire was from Portland to LA, but may end up on 101 if the snow is too bad. What's the best way to protect the car for a drive that long (1k miles) in the winter?
My plan is to put a good coat of wax on it, and then put a layer of blue tape over most of the front. Instead of 4-5 layers of blue tape, I'm toying with the idea of putting a layer of duct tape over the blue tape. It'll be water proof and really protect against chips. The blue tape should protect the paint from the duct tape adhesive, right?

Just blue tape should be enough, but the duct tape over it will add extra protection and should be fine.

I'm worried that blue tape will get all waterlogged and fly off in the downpour that I'm sure will be accompanying the majority of the trip.

I know JustinB had blue painters tape on his and it has been rained on and as far as I know stayed on just fine.

The best thing to do is drive it carefully and don't tailgate. No one salts out there, right?

No, just sand. The majority of the drive will be overnight, so hopefully I shouldn't be in too much traffic.
