so what is this (panel in passenger side wheel well)?

I haven't gotten around to tracing it, but behind a rusted-out cover panel in the passenger side rear wheel well, it looks like at least two cables or hoses or something running up toward the fuel filler door area.

Part of the central locking system (I thought I heard something about it locking the fuel filler door too?)....part of the fuel system (though can't think of what it would be)?

I have an M10 318i....battery is in the engine bay

Would they have wired the car for a trunk battery even if it was never trunk-mounted?

something that would make that statement ironic ;) (don't worry, it's not what you think, there won't be anyone knocking down your door tonight)

thanks, I finally pulled the wheel well liner and it looks like an evap system/overflow tank as you said. Random place to put it, and the main hose looks gnarly. Wonder if it should be replaced :/
