OP, as far as I know it's never been done. There have been whisperings of it in the past but most have given up since it seems so difficult. The M50 is hard to find as well as BMW didn't make that many of them.
The good news is there are others that wonder the same things as you and your friend. These fine folks have a dedicated site not only to find the M50s, but also to discuss how you would go about putting one in your car and maybe making it run.
And don't let these guys fool you, the Land Rover oil pan isn't required. Since the M50 and the M20 are both I6 engines, the oil pans will probably swap over. You may need to wrestle it on there, but it should work. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
