New member, joining the dark side!

    Hello,

My name is Ben, I am a vehicle enthusiast. I have an addiction, and I cannot shake it.

What brings me here? My addiction and the fact that I can no longer support my habit on the vehicle that I was feeding it with.

06 GLI that I spent way too much money on installing a GT3071r, BRUTE forged/rifle drilled drop in rods with stock pistons, snow perf w/m, and many other modifications.
The goal was 500whp, I had it to 400+, enough to pull on a 470whp GTO.
This motor is direct injection, so it wasn't obvious that my in tank pump was failing and causing a lean condition until this happened....

So, what brings me here? Well I am not spending $1000 on a long block, and I am sick of the cost to get decent performance out of new vehicles... So I spoke to my brother who has a 88 325i 4 door sitting with a broken timing belt. $500 and it is mine!
Two days ago I tracked down a m20b25 with 80k on it and made the long drive to New Jersey with a friend and my wife to pick it up, $250 later I got a complete engine, new water pump, and spark plugs. Man do I wish I had bought a 20+ year old car a long time ago! I could have saved thousands!
My brother is towing the e30 here on Friday, and I will be working through the night swapping out engines. Fortunately I have my own shop so I should be done in a few hours, I will update this thread as soon as I have some photos of the new ride to show off.

    My Plan?

I have abandoned my quest for huge horsepower. This car will be a well rounded machine, a balance of handling, braking, and acceleration.

    Engine:
The GT30 will go on, with the 38mm Tial wastegate. MS will control the fuel and eventually the timing, with a MLS head gasket and ARP head bolts to contain 1 bar.

I do not have a horsepower expectation, Nor will I create one. 1 bar is my only demand, I have found that if you specify horsepower, then you will only want more.

    Suspension:
I will probably go with Spec E30 suspension, billies and H&R race, along with poly bushings all around and adjustable sway bars.

    Body:
Incognito weight reduction, speaker box carpet for a clean look, converting the power windows to manual (anyone want to trade?), anywhere I can drop weight I will. After the engine is turbocharged and running, a 4 point bar with removable cross bar will be in order.

    Misc:
Right off the bat I will be removing the a/c and components, as well as P/S . If I don't need it, it will be coming off. I drive only 3 miles to work every day, so comfort is not much of an issue.

Anyway, these plans stretch a good bit into the future. This will be a slow process, but I have to set goals and limits now, other wise I'm sure I will find a way to spend way too much money on this car. However, this is a budget build, as I am getting myself out of debt and refuse to spend money I don't have (again).

The budget? I want to spend less than 5k on the whole car, over the next few years before it is completed. I plan on making it too, with a combination of self build and patience. Keeping an eye open for cheap deals on used parts. ;)

Not much about me here at all, but I know we all only really care about the ride. 8)

Sounds good though man, sorry to hear about your last car, but glad you joined the light side and realized old cars > new cars.

Sounds like it will be one hell of a mean build !

As soon as I have the car pics will be up. I have to take some shots of the new engine too. Today I bead blasted the valve cover and put a fresh coat of semi-gloss black engine enamel and used a sponge to paint the BMW logo and the raised lines in red. Setting the theme for the whole car. Black with red accents.

Does the car have a red int too? If you're going for a red and black look, there is a 4 door e30 up this way thats been sitting with a Crimson int. Dont know if its for sale or what, but has been sitting for awhile.

              Welcome to the good side!

BTW, manual windows are really no lighter than electric ones.

Really? I will have to do some digging and find the difference. If it is negligible, then I will stay with the ease of push buttons.

Mmm that lean condition looks nasty. Was it only leaning out in one cylinder? If not did you have an A/F gauge hooked up that would have, diagnosed the issue strait away.

Anyways I always thought VW's are gay so welcome, and you can collect your man card.

Yea I didn't do enough datalogging. The stock ECM on the car was very advanced and utilized a wide-band from the factory. I put a little too much trust into it to pull enough boost and timing to keep it alive.

I will take that Man card, with a shot of mojo thank you.

Oh yea, one more thing... FWD sucks.:pimp:

Cool story and background. Your goal should be easily attainable and I promise
the e30 with decent power and suspension will be much more enjoyable than a VW.

Regulators are the same weight between manual and electric. As is the glass.
So multiply this weight times how many doors you have. It isn't really worth it ;)

Also, Congratulations on growing up and getting out of the newer Vdub world!

Consider doing an m20 boosted stroker build, or even a boosted M50. I mean, the motor already has to come out. so why not?
