Hey everybody. Why back in the 80's my dad had an autotragic mk1 scirocco with 3 side draft webber carbs, edelbrock intake manifold and headers. He is convinced that if he still had it would be able to smoke my stock 325is not only in the corners but in a straight line. What do you guys think? Thanks

I have owned many a VW and have had three Scirocco's and compared to a stock E30 it would be useless with the 3 speed auto.
I have had a 81 Scirocco S with a built 9A 2.0L 8V with a 5 speed and all the old skool 80's stuff. Quick and fun but not an off the line car as it tended to just roast the tires on the shorter drive shaft due too Torque Steer. No Quaife in that car, the next one got that toy. With that they were fun. I went to a Quaife and a added a 6 speed to my 4K gearbox. Ouch was that expensive but made up for it auto-Xing but the dreaded three wheeling called for upgraded Koni's 1001F&R with Techtonic's Tuning anti sways and exhaust.
The car went from a street fun car to a bouncing semi streetable car that compromised a bunch of aspects.
Bad driver in an e30 maybe.

This one time at band camp.....
Way back in the day.... 80 or 81 my Mom's boyfriend had a Callaway Mk1 Sirocco. White with black and white plad interior. I kept tabs on it for years. One day in the early 90's or late 80's it turned up at the local vw dealer with the front all burned up from a fire. What a bummer. It was really fast and very very cool.

A Mk1 Scirocco would have the 1.8 liter 8v. With Webers, header, exhaust, and an intake (did he have a cam upgrade?) (and no serious machine work), you're looking at 125-135 bhp at the crank, max. However, it would weigh in at 2100 to 2300 lbs, whereas your '89 325is is about 2800 with 168bhp. Figuring 2200lb and 130bhp for the VW gives a ratio of 16.9lbs/bhp. The BMW is 16.6lbs/bhp. Clearly it's close if the Scirocco has a manual trans and it would come down to the driver, tires, and gearing. However, with the 3 speed auto in the Scirocco, I can't see any way on Earth the VW would be faster. No way.
BTW, we have the same E30. Same year, model, and color. Is yours black leather?'89 BMW 325is Zinnoberrot / '88 VW Jetta GLI 16v Tornado Red / '89 VW Jetta GLI 16v Tornado Red / '89 VW GTI 16v Bright Blue Metallic / '91 BMW 325i Black / '91 BMW 325i Sport Black / '92 VW GTI 16v Black / '92 VW GTI 16v Montana Green / '01 Audi A4 Avant TQM Silver Metallic / '01 VW Jetta GLX VR6 Black

1.6L heron head engines were ok for rev's but lack torque.

That being said, the car would have had less power than I estimated and a lower power/weight ratio. Definitely don't see the BMW being slower.'89 BMW 325is Zinnoberrot / '88 VW Jetta GLI 16v Tornado Red / '89 VW Jetta GLI 16v Tornado Red / '89 VW GTI 16v Bright Blue Metallic / '91 BMW 325i Black / '91 BMW 325i Sport Black / '92 VW GTI 16v Black / '92 VW GTI 16v Montana Green / '01 Audi A4 Avant TQM Silver Metallic / '01 VW Jetta GLX VR6 Black
