What Cab is saying is that the lobes are almost non-existant on a 342 which means the valves stay open for a lengthy duration.
I am going to wait for forced or someone to chime in. I know enough to be dangerous. But not enough to agree with 400 bhp while still using the 885 head.

I would like to see this car in person.

First thought: "18:1 compression is common on a diesel motor..."

*Does quick search on google for M21D24 compression ratio, finds answer*

Second thought: "They ran a 9:1 CR in those?!"

        Third thought: "WTF?"

Final thought: Why am I describing my thought pattern in third person over the interwebz?

I'm sure his engine goes like stink.

But that's just outlandish. The max I've heard a NA BMW inline six put out is 475 hp on race fuel on a stroked race S54.

What kind of racing are we talking about here? 400hp from an M20 can be done. But don't expect it to be tracked, drag only. I think there are some numbers mixed up here. The M20 head could handle 10,000rpm with the right parts and work. As for a 323 crank I don't think so, it will twist and brake under those piston speeds. You would need something like a Scat billet custom crank. I would also guess that the M20 head would not be very efficent for 10,000rpm

As for 18:1 comp ratio well I don't think so F1 cars have 17:1, methonal engines do 16:1, I have never heard of 18:1.

Also are we talk'in 400hp at the fly or wheels?

Anyways to answer your question I don't think so. If you look at it from a general maths point of view, some of the most efficent race cars are BTTC cars they put down about 17-18hp/1000rpm/liter, for a 2.5l M20 it would need to do the same to make 400hp, and I just don't think you could get the head to flow enough to do that.

I drove a swapped (s52) e36 allegedly built from a gentlemen in Leominster. The owner said he bought it from a guy that built a lot of e30's and e36's. The car was sprayed bright yellow and it sat on 19 inch rims. Looked good, but there had to of been something wrong it - I think the guibo and center bearing, because it drove terribly.

18 to 1 with a 2 valve combustion chamber is probably not happening, or is it needed. Is 400 hp possible, sure it is. Where is 342 degrees measured? That sounds a little embellished, the valves would hit each other on overlap and it's not necessary. The gentleman Del is talking about could do it but as he said , it takes a lot of changes.

FredK, this guy has built 460hp NA M30's and he doesn't even consider that radical. For some reason BMW guys think 2V BMW engines cant make much power!

I've noticed a lot of guys who "don't post on the internet at all" and spit mountains of "knowledge" seem to be full of shit most of the time. Met a guy with a supposed 800hp M20 turbo build (???) and he was sitting in his car at a meet tuning his ecu map while explaining to me that the guys on the E30 forums are pussies who just say stuff can't be done. The car had purple graphics, no hood and what appeared to be 3 harnesses worth of wire tangled around.

Then on the other hand I've met legitimate geniuses who keep to themselves as well, like the guy who had an amazing fully functioning S54 swap a few years ago.

Did he tell you his coil packs had 100,000 volts each? Because I think I've seen him around the web. Not in a good way.
