Hey all.
I'm no activist, but this could affect us all and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Mods, feel free to move it, but as it could affect this site and many of our favorite e30 content on the web, I thought I'd start here first for max exposure. I searched thread titles SOPA and returned 0 results, apologies if this has been discussed at length.
Long story short, many of your favorite sites will be "going dark" today, in protest of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act. The site that I'll be missing most today is a home theater PC site, XBMC, but I'd imagine everyone here will notice it somewhere (tech sites, etc). Brief details of SOPA below:
The "Stop Online Piracy Act"/"E-PARASITE Act" (SOPA) and "The PROTECT IP Act" (PIPA) are the latest in a series of bills which would create a procedure for creating (and censoring) a blacklist of websites. These bills are updated versions of the “Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act" (COICA), which was previously blocked in the Senate. Although the bills are ostensibly aimed at reaching foreign websites dedicated to providing illegal content, their provisions would allow for removal of enormous amounts of non-infringing content including political and other speech from the Web.
Sounds very :hitler: to me.
So in case you don't know about it, look into it, feel free to discuss, I myself don't know much about it and would like to hear more from those who know more than me.
My source of the day so far is https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/1...sopa-activists linked to me from xbmc.
How it could affect me as a member of r3v is censorship of content that I want to see, and I plan to take whatever action I can, including online petitions, writing my congressman (lmaooooo! never worked before, for me anyway) and writing a blog post about it.
Your thoughts?
