Very few cars I'd trade straight across for my M3. (I'm talking about realistic trades, yes of course I'll take an R8 or a GT40).

The one that comes to mind is in the first post: Acura NSX. A similar thread came up on S14 to which I replied:

They're a lot like the E30 M3. Iconic, looks have aged very well (IMHO) and despite their pedigree (race car, supercar) they are both fairly livable as daily/nice weather drivers and not horrible on maintenance.

I'll take mine in Grand Prix White, pre-1995 coupe, bone stock.

Edit: One guy on the forum has both:
I love some of the ignorance and biases here just much as I do when I hear Honda fan boys spewing unfounded hearsay about BMW's.
I have both the E30 M3 and the NSX and at least I speak from experience.
I have no stock or allegiance to either car company so no fan boy here.
Don't believe any BS you have heard here...go get some seat time in an NSX before you decide to get one...moreover, go research the car at NSXPRIME.COM under the wiki section - wealth of knowledge there.
I can tell you one thing about the nsx - it is intoxicating!
Below is a pic of my m3 and NSX.
Ohh yeah my car just came back from a full tune up at bullet in costa mesa
Car was worked on by andy - great guy and a great shop.

but I would trade it for a new 1M!!! or maybe a pristine E9.
20k can get you a pretty decent pre-964 911. That'd definetly be up there on my list of potentials. A "pristine" e9 would be pretty difficult to come by for 20k at this point.

But yea, really not a whole lot else I'd mess around with in a similar age/price range. From what the OP posted, I wouldn't even bother with the E39 M5 or the Benz. The NSX I could see, and judging by the E30 M3 community, seems to be a natural progression from when they leave the car.

Good handling driver's car, strong pedigree, "underpowered" but still fun.

Almost traded my 911 for a nsx Just remember parts are twice the cost of an m3. Stock clutch alone is 1500 w/o labor. Plus there's not that many peeps that specialize in them.
Are you wanting to trade for the rarity or performance aspect?

Only car I'd trade plus cash is for a 993 Porsche.

I'm on the 993 program as well.

I have the E39 M5 already and I didn't, nor would I have traded for the M3. They are cars for two very different purposes.

With 993 TT values that keep climbing, it may be a while before I replace the M3, but that will happen some day in the next several years. Just wish it would be a straight trade :P

Oh, and I'll take mine in Guards Red please:

Dude out of 18 years of my life I've only seen an m3 e30 once, and no I haven't been on a 400 HP car before. I'm not cheap man, I just can't afford it haha

I really can't think of anything I'd rather have over an E30 M3. Like I said, a '72 Skyline would be ideal, after that, perhaps the right E9 3.0 CS or CSi, maybe an E31 850 with a 6 speed (its such a huge car however.) Maybe an airplane, a Stinson 108 or a Cessna 175, or a Globe/Temco Swift.

Porsche's are too common, as are NSXs. A Lotus Elise/Exage I thought would have been ideal, but I was unimpressed by the one I autoXed. There is nothing American I would buy, and I can't think of another European car I'd rather have. As far as Japanese cars, the S2000 is the closest thing to a sports car out there, but they are way too common, and I like the way the M3 drives more.

Sure an R32 GTR Skyline would be sweet, but they are illegal in the US. If I lived in Canada, I'd already have one. The later cars don't really do it for me. Since I have never ridden in or driven an R32, I might not even like it.

Now that I really think about it, it would have to be an airplane of some sort.

Only reason I trade my m3 is for a car worth more I could sell and get two m3's.

of the choices..i'd choose the NSX...i drove one and loved it, it didn't have PS so it was a little pain when starting to move off whenever i had to turn, but it was nice..

if i had extra money to put on top..an exige would be my choice, i promised myself i'm going to own one before i die..lol

My biggest gripe with the Lotus is there is no place to put your left foot. It must stay on the clutch pedal at all times. My guess is that is why they eat clutches. The front wheel well is right next to the clutch pedal, and if you try to pull your foot back and rest it flat, your knee goes into the bottom of the dash. If you happen to have big feet, (size 12) that makes everything worse. The steering and brake pedal feel vague as well. They also seem to have lots of mid corner and corner exit understeer. I wanted one until I drove one, now I'd rather have something else (I'm not sure what.)
