I would say about 30 miles from home. After a nice mountain cruise-ish, fuel pump decided to cook itself on the way back before the mountain. Called a friend with a truck and tow strap but fortunately the pump cooled and I limped back home.

Don't know if you can call it a breakdown, but I ran out of brake pads in the front 1000 miles from home. No dealers in Germany had pads for my willwood calipers in stock, so I had to drive all the way home to Norway braking with the engine and the e-brake.
I managed to get home without destroying the rotors. :)

I am also driving to SoWo from PA in my e36 m3. Were staying at the helendorf btw.

Anyway, I'm bringing two spare tires, spare rad, hoses, oil and coolant.. Better to be safe then sorry.

My e30 never broke down, besides snapping a power steering belt one time..

I totally would have tried to rig panty hose or something into a makeshift belt and drive to autozone.

My only experience was the car died on me right down the road where I live, this was shortly after I got the car and I accidentally flipped a toggle switch that controlled the fuel pump. Prolly took me an hour till I figured out why I wasn't getting any power to the fp even with the relay jumped.

I think someone on r3v actually used two shoelaces tied to each other to effect a makeshift belt.

The throttle cable broke once,15 miles from home when i was on the 10 freeway. Coasted off the freeway at idle speed. Popped the hood (THANK YOU BMW because it goes towards the front of the car when opening) and got a bungee cord and put it on the throttle linkage and held my hand out the window and pulled on it to accel my way home. I was going to use shoelaces but the bungee cord was right there, easy access.

Road trip from Seattle to LA. Broke down in Newport RIGHT after smoking a joint. Car wouldn't start. Cop came up to me and hassled my ass. A possession ticket later, had to get my car towed. LUCKILY found this BMW shop nearby who had a spare M42 motor they pulled to make a race car. Bullet Performance. Sold the alternator from the motor to me for $50, installed it for $50. One hour and $100 later my car is back on the road driving strong. Easily the best/worst day ever!

Jeeez. I guess Murphy's law just fucked me. I was CLOSE to breaking down in SF today. My starter might be going out. Luckily it fired up after the fifth try. Atleast I was in park presideo and not Turk lol.

My M50 cars alternator completely died about 2mins after i left work (10miles from home), rang my dad and it just so happened he was 1mile away dropping his 2002 off at the workshop and now had an empty trailer ;)
Other than that no other breakdowns on the road... (2 at the track but that doesnt count...)
