You might want to ask here:

The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

I hope you've done lots of research on E39s. They are phenomenal cars, though they are not cheap to maintain properly - especially if you are not a DIYer!

^well its not a 540 so that makes a big differnce. Biggest concern Ive read about is the cooling systems, which I am capable of doing myself. Fluids etc I can do at work fairly easily.

So as for maint only 1st was done at the dealer?

Also thanks ethirdy for the information.

True on the 540. The cooling systems need to be completely replaced every 100K. The bimmerfest forum I linked has a metric ton of information and DIYs. How many miles are on it? Got a link to the f/s ad or any pics?

My first impressions are very positive. It's super clean! And bonus points for it being a Touring!

It may sound silly, but one of my good friends who works for a well-known national vehicle wholesaler said that nine times out of ten a car with Michelins on it has been better maintained than one without them.

One thing that stands out to me is that the pixels on the MID have the classic failure. There are a number of places to get that repair taken care of, Module Masters being one of the more reputable ones. With the car's mileage uncertain and rapidly approaching 100k, there are a lot of things that you'll likely want/need to do (including the cooling system) since that's considered a "lifetime" by the new BMW standards.

The best advice I can give you is to take it to a BMW dealer and spend the $200 on a PPI (pre-purchase inspection). That money can/will easily pay for itself when negotiating a price for this one, or keep you from making an $8000 mistake. I think in this case the latter is unlikely, but I also think it's worth $200 to be sure.

damn, seems a little high from an individual BUT I can see that price if it was at a dealer. Knock on wood but my has 185,000 miles and have done nothing but oil changes, brakes and fuel. 2000 528it / m52. Been a good car, its my daily now.

whoops, just read the ad, I assumed it was an individual sale. Dealer has it at full retail pop. Before I bought mine I looked all over auto trader for either 3 or 5 series tourings. I was lucky to scoop mine up for $4500 , cosmos black, 17" bbs wheels, sports package blah blah blah. Man, do whatever feels good. Drive it like you stole it when you go to test drive it. It would be nice if you can start it "cold" so that if it does have a vanos problem it will show up at idle. Once it warms up the vanos idle stumble will go away. Does that make any sense ? Anyhow looks like it was dealer maintained according to history, cant beat that.

I passed on the car which sucks since I drove about 6hrs roundtrip to look at it. We couldnt meet on price... about $300 difference, plus oil on the splash gaurd under the engine,,, no drops on the ground though. Rear windows made a funny binding noise raised, needed new rear tires, slight growl on startup (vanos rattle) minor things really but they add up quickly. All that said it was extremely clean and presented very very well. Ice cold AC a very nice car, but not worth over $7500 in my mind. Espc considering he told me he put no $$$ into the car, and he prob paid $5.5 for it at auction. All said I felt good walking away from it so I know it was the correct decision for me.

This is what kills me. I really hate buying from dealers because i hate paying them. I paid $7k for my car from a dealer. I talked to the po who claimed he was paid $6k for it, but I don't believe it. But my car is rare. You can easily find a guy who'll take $200 - $500 for letting you use his access to dealers auctions. I'd rather just buy right from auction my self, than to pay a man with no discernible skills or talents. Or keep searching and find a legitimate owner. GL
