Drove This Last Night, Deal or No Deal?

    http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5568781-FS-89-325i-E30-RED-on-Tan-leather-sedan-Solid-car-runs-great

Went to check out and drive this car last night and I need to make a decision.

We'll go over the exterior first...

Rust starting in 2 spots. Front left fender low near the jack point and some around the rear tow hook. I know these are common places for these cars. The rust in these areas is not visibly bubbling but you know it is there. I wonder what it would cost to fix....

No rust in the battery tray.

The paint on the car is near mint. Car has never been in an accident, I could not find a door ding. Just one minor ding on the rear of the trunk lid that could be easily removed with paintless removal.

    Moving to the interior...
Crack free dash, comfort seats (leather/pleather in great shape), carpeting clean, non-smoker, right rear power window does not go up or down, power locks work. Seats are kind of gummed up. The drivers and passenger seats do not like to lock into position when you are trying to make adjustments to where you would adjust how far back the seat is leaned. I'm sure it is an easy fix just needs to be cleaned up.

The car felt great mechanically. The previous owner had done some work. He did the timing belt 3k ago, waterpump belts, intake and exhaust gaskets plus the head gasket. (He works at BMW of Nashua)

Car also has new struts and a new wheel bearing in one of the wheels (no idea which one).

Brakes are good, guibo is good.

Engine pulled very good in all 5 gears. It cruised on the highway beautifully and went through the bumpy streets of Manchester without and funny noises. I have to say I fell in love with the way this car drove (first E30 drive).

Engine had a tick at idle, sounded almost like a sewing machine. You could not hear it inside the car when driving. the owner tells me that the longtime BMW techs at his dealership say this is completely normal. Is this correct?

So the owner says he will go to $2,500. What do you think... deal, no deal?

The ticking at idle is normal on the m20 engines. It is the lifters, which do need to be adjusted every now and then.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

Forgot to mention he adjusted the valves.
I'm really leaning towards this car. My plan is to dump my Honda Civic SI (flame away it is all stock, paid off and has served its purpose) and bring this to awesome daily driver status. The small rust areas worry me though...

If it didn't have any serious rust I'd buy it for that price.

Seems like a great price, the rust seems minimal and is something that can be fixed. Unless you really want 100% rust free, I'd jump on this. Bring $2250 and see if you can get a few dollars off.

Yah. I want it pretty bad. When I got back into my Honda I felt like I was driving a damned mini van. No response in the steering and a terrible ride. Steering wheel just felt numb....

You might wanna pull back the carpet and double check that spot. If its not rusted through id go for it. If i had more money id pick it up in a heartbeat.

I think it may be the light. Unfortunately I looked at it at night so it would be tough to tell. I know the panels lined up perfectly and it cruised down the highway nice and straight at 80 mph.

the rear window not going down, could be just a gummed up window switched. I had the same issue with a car I got that the windows would work sporadically. I talked him down a couple hundred bucks. When I got home took a little alcohol cleaned and sanded the contacts, and now it works like new
