What would you pay for this car?

'89 325i sedan in silver. 268k on the clock, but owner has ALL the maintenance records. It looks like it has been really well kept and maintained. I obviously wouldn't pay $2600 for a car with nearly 300k miles, but what would be a reasonable offer to make? And how long can I reasonably expect a well-maintained m20 to last? 300? 350?

I'd offer $2,000, personally, but I don't know if I'd go much under that. It looks clean and well-kept and don't let the mileage scare you. My car's at 234k and it runs amazingly. Good luck!

M20's are tanks. I have had no problems with mine and I'm approaching 230k. And that's without the maintenance records. Asking price is decently fair in my opinion, as long as everything in it works.

1700 depending. If it's had a refresh done to the motor, you can expect it to last a long time. If not, it's time to do one. That will cost you at least $600- $800 bucks. Leverage due to repair. Buy it for no more than 1700.

Motor "refresh" entails what? You sound like a used car salesman.

I don't think $2600 is unreasonable. I'd offer $2250. It's a b25 with a recent timing belt job done. Looks clean. No rust from a PNW car. Looks like a great unmolested platform.

depends if he is an enthusiast or not. if he doesnt know shit about the car and the following, I would say low-ball him and tell him its an awful lot of money for a car with close to 300k on the odo, if it still works.

if you go in there with enthusiast reasons like pantless, I think he will certainly keep the price where it is.

I got my first E30 for $1600 off a guy that did german delivery and drove it for 25 years. He didn't have a price on it so he asked me what I would pay for it. I offered $1200, it was all original, 180k on the odo, with every service record including the printout from the factory floor with the accessories listed. He came back and said he say some prices all over the place and was thinking around $2100. Still way under what it was worth. I offered him $1600 before he could post it online for you vultures to snag it. He took it and I thats how I fell in love with my car.

He has all the service records, may even be the original owner...the price is decent if you like a four door.

I prefer four doors after cabrios for a few reasons.
He'll probably go down a few hundred but if you like it and want it don't screw around too much or you'll lose it.

if it was silver i would have picked it up a few days ago. I was so close to buying it because of those pictures... ITS BRONZIT =(

I had the guy down to 2g's before even going out there, you should be able to get it for cheap.

                    exactly!
some idiots think an oil change and spark plugs is a motor refresh, while i consider a full dissasembly and inspection, new rings and seals a refresh. i know a few friends who would say resurfacing and honeing the cylinders is the only way the motor could be refreshed.

If it is an older fellow, chances are the prices can be negotiated. I picked up my sedan for cheap and the PO said he would sell it to someone who truly appreciated it. He even told me to give him a fair price and when I did, he accepted.

get the car. They are easy to work on, relatively cheap parts, and these M20's are bulletproof.

This guy claims to be selling it because he bought a newer 328is, but the same day he also posted a 328is for sale claiming his "money situation calls for it":

Make sure he's not some kind of flipper and that the title his name or at least make him come clean about his story. The car is worth a least to $2k if it runs halfway decent, thats probably the price he has in mind.
