Scratches on our 135 after dealer service

      It happened with my brothers e46 few years ago, they left two black narks on the rear bumper. I noticed it a day later and went back to thembut couldnt do anything because i didnt point it out while there.

        I detail cars at a BMW dealership. I doubt those heavy scratches could have been caused by anything that was not highly deliberate. Those light scratches would possibly be signs of sand in a wash mit or having gone through an auto wash. Even using a clean rag of the wrong material might do that.

        Are you sure someone didn't key your car?

          I dont really loose my temper very quickly. Our service adviser seamed like a really good guy. i think he will hook us up. I havent got any word back from them yet, but he might not have been at work today.

          Well we live in the burbs on a very quiet street with big wide roads and almost no traffic. Dont think it happened while it was parked out side our house. I work in the city but park in a private parking lot where all the cars stay far apart. The scrapes also look like they were wiped on or some one with a key chain or metal on their pants leaned on the car and moved around. It does not look like car or bike damage as you would see in a city. If I had driven the car near a tree or bush and the branches hit the car I think I would have noticed that as well. I know my cars very well and pay really close attention to them. I am actually very surprised I did not see this at the dealer, besides the fact that one of my best friends quit work that day and I was very distracted and upset at the time. If scratches like that had been on the drivers side of the car which I see everyday all the time before I took the car in i would have known it.

            If there were rocks/ sand in the wash mitt I would think there would be more scratches over the entire surface of the car. It almost looks as if someone may have been leaning up against your car moving around in some way to scratch it up like that; especially with those couple deep looking ones (zipper/buttons). Whether or not it happened at the dealership is something you're going to have to prove or at least put enough doubt in their mind that it didn't happen there in order for them to cover it I would think. I'm surprised you didn't notice those scratches which are only a couple feet from where you enter the car when you picked it up from service. Was it dark out?
            Noticed in your post above you mentioned someone with a keychain or metal on their pants leaned against the car and moved around; kinda described what is hanging from your belt loop.

              I'd agree with 318isfc3s, it looks to be about waist height or a big higher. Could be a zipper from overalls or buttons from a jacket or pants. Hope it works out, scratches suck!

                IDK - looks too linear to be from a hand wash job. Something like a womans purse or a backpack scratches maybe. Possibly form someone parked too close to you and putting something in/out of their backseat.

                Either way, it sucks and I hope you can get them cleaned up.

                  I work for Lexus, we experience this a lot. If we damage a car, we fix it, and typically comp whatever service the customer was in for and do what is needed to make then satisfied. BMW, not so much. I've heard from BMW service writers about how they push it off or deny as much as possible.
                  As for my dealership, protocall is each car is inventoried of damages at the time it arrives and is signed off on by a valet. That way we can refference what we caused or if someone is being deceitful(we almost always give benefit of doubt).

                  You will likely get a customer survey in the mail or email. If you are unsatisfied the survey will likely be bumped up to higher mgmt. And they will try to appease you.


                  As far as I see, if someone fucks up, they should fix it. It's most likely someone who wasn't even working on your car some how scratched it and didn't report it.

                    I was a service adviser at a Subaru dealership in Montana, needless to say lots of cars came in with scratches, it was standard protocol to make note of any scratches prior to taking keys.

                    On pickup the customer was supposed to inspect the car as well. Once the customer left, the dealership had no legal responsibility to fix any damage. Can't begin to count the times that someone would come in a day later yelling like crazy (looking for free repairs), only to show them that the damage was already there prior to the visit.

                    The times people came back in a few days later with 'new' damage were typically given a sincere apology. The ONLY time we fixed unrecorded damage after they left was when they approached us very politely, without being threatening. Those people made you WANT to help them (even if we weren't legally required to).

                          That's awful, sorry to hear it man. Unfortunately you don't have a leg to stand on unless you have time stamped photographs before and after you brought it to the dealership. It also adds insult to injury you left-then noticed it. Their argument is solid with "it came in that way, or it happened once it left"...Hopefully they own up to it, but it's going to be pretty hard to prove. And forget about suing BMW, doubt that would go far. I hope they reconcile and acknowledge their mistake. Good luck sir...Didn't read the entire thread, but which BMW dealership was this?

                              We get a few people a month claiming scratches on their cars at the dealership I work at. I know that 99% of the time it is noticed only because the people are looking extra close on their NOW clean car- they find scratches and such that have been there before. You cannot prove they did it-or are even 100% sure it was them, so why should they fix it?

                              I cannot see why scratches would be in a place like that after a service..........
                              really sorry about that though, just goes to show how much people don't respect each ther anymore.

                                This. I've worked on cars and had to go talk to the customer/service manager about scratches/dents that I 100% could not have produced in the time it was on my lift, or even the automatic carwash we have. Service writers are supposed to take note of any damage on the vehicle when it comes in but sometimes they are so worried about getting paper work done and getting to the next customer they skip that step. Like Mike said most of the time the cars are so dirty(not saying you) they don't notice the scratches until all the shit is wiped off of them. I work in the land of the cheap and bitchy though so YMMV. If you bitch enough they will give it to you if they are anything like my dealer. Do it in a respectful but firm way and don't flip your lid, that goes a long way at my dealer.
