I was going to say "damn, that looks like a bomb dump." Two seconds on google and it turns out that it was a british bomb dump during the cold war.

Well, you can't exactly build one in a metropolitan area.

        +1 to the Jew Barn/shop.
You're right! They would need let a place like laguna seca exist in order for that to start making sense! ;)

Yes this was a former WSA that held Brit Nukes. I sent you a 190 page pdf on the scaling down of weapons in EU about a month ago.

Rather dry read but I like Cold War stuff. Bitburg was surrounded by all sorts of stuff. There were three Nike sites surrounding the Base. The bad is the history is disappearing.

yeah, I read that a few years ago, and I agree that it is interesting, especially if your living right in the area that is being talked about.

Funny thing... I was picking up parts at my local dealer when a guy see's my I.D. card. A bit of talking later and it turns out this guy was an ammo troop at Sembach from 62-66! Said Germany was crazy back in the 60's with all the cold war hype.

was one of those sites on the L39 parallel to the runway? I always wondered what that random place was... Looked built up, but no longer used. Also do you remember what the Oberweis complex was used for?

Oberweis was a Mace& Matador missile site, my ex used to work at the WRM site in Herforst for Med's. The L39 strip was cool, but back in my 130 days we were used to deploying to this type of fields.

Hell in Saudi we used AM2 matting runways in the realm of 8000 feet. It was sicking thinking of all that aluminium.

Extensive directory of air bases and military airfields during the Cold War in Europe. 17 countries, approx. 1000 airfields. With historical maps, satellite images and photos.
